Yeah, exactly. I don't even think that a large 'fuge could support one in a 29gal tank. But I'm probably gettin' ahead of the situation here....maybe he doesn't plan on puttin' it in the 29 gal.

Rod gets them eating his food ASAP. After that, I believe you can place them in any sized tank as long as their eating his food.

Just don't want to see such an awesome fish die for lack of knowledge on certain husbandry requirements. Not tryin' to stick my nose in this guy's business, but then again he might not know that a mandarin will require atleast a 75gal tank and about 100+ pounds of live rock. I made the exact same mistake of putting a mandarin in a 29 gal before I knew anything about their required care, and I don't want to see someone else make this same mistake that can be easily avoided. My intention is to help out here. Thanks.

I'd reccomend you get atleast 75# of LR in there, and make sure you have some that is very branchy with pores and holes.
Do you have a sump? That would really help if you could have a fuge stuffed with macro. Feed your tank phytoplankton once every other day to keep the pods reproducing. Get one that is eating and feed it rod food in a cleaned out small olive jar (so the food stays in for his grazing). And you might be alright. The tank should be atleast 6 months old before you get one.

hey guys i was thinkin of getting one for my 75 with like 110 pounds of LR with a fuge and frag tank plumbed in with tons of pods. problem is theres damsels and clowns in the tank and im afraid they eat enough pods in the tank it self that the manderin wont have enough. had one before when the tank was young and he didnt make it. any thoughts?

bigbadbasile - Personally I've never seen a negative impact on my pod population after adding damsels or clownfish to a tank. From what I've seen, I think these fish are interested in "bigger" food. I would definately get on from Rod's Reef that is eating Rod's food. He sells the mandarins for a very good price and you don't have to worry about pod populations in your tank. Of course I would still try to keep the pod population as high as possible so as to add more diversity to the mandarin's diet.

This is one of my concewrn, if I don't move my DSB into my upgraded tank. I have a Psyc. Manderin. If I just seed the new tank w/some of my LS, it won't be enough.

I had one that recently died/starved. The tank was over 6 mos old and he did fine until recently. I bought pods etc.
Does Rod sell mandarins that eat his food?

One of my more fond memories regarding mandarins (hey! Newbie here!) revolves around Zoolander and his mandarin. He kept really good care of both his zoos and fish...
...I felt really lucky to get his mandarin. I owe him at least a plane ride. Why the fond memory? He'd sprinkle a dash of frozen food in his tank, look at his fish, and say "look at how *fat* he is...
He's probably getting fatter. When I picked him up I felt a bit of responsibility, and was worried s*itless I was going to deep six him.
He eats Rods Food, and in a great while, he enjoys arctic pods...
...on a 58G tank.

marilyrn - Yes Rod does sell mandarins that he has eatin' his food. This is probably the best chance for someone to easily maintain a mandarin in a tank that is smaller than 250gal.
