WTB protein skimmer for 45g

I need a protein skimmer for a 45g tank. Orginally I was going to get a new PS-75 and mod it , but i wanna see if I can get something better used.

Anyone have a protein skimmer they don't use anymore , that I can get from them for cheap?

I see Aslav is selling a mesh-moded Coralife 220 skimmer , but it is rated for a 220g tank. Isn't it possible to overskim?

I've got one that I recently took out of my 55 gallon. It's a Tunze and a great skimmer, but it only works well if you're sump is deep enough to keep the water level at an optimum performance level. My sump is not.

Tomorrow I'll clean it up, figure out a fair price to start at and get back to you if you're interested.

You are looking for an in-sump skimmer or hang on?

It's not the nano version. It's the Comline, in sump - probably entry level of the full size Tunzes. I'm looking for the model number.

Eek , those are $300 new.

I know it's not very likely , but I was hoping to find something that was cheap but still got the job done. Something around $50-75. ( I know , I know , I'm cheap )

Hmmmm........ I don't know. Can't find a model number on it.

Dave ... I got it from you. It works great if I keep my sump water level high. Only problem is that at that water level, my sump floods over if the power gets cut.

Does it have the outlet pipe with the blue sponge?

That is the sump kit and doesn't come with the 9005. The sump kit sets the water level in the skimmer body so it is not effected by external sump level. With out the kit the skimmer must be in a water level that coincides with the water line mark on the body.

If you do have the kit something is not installed correctly or has become misaligned.

Thanks, Dave

Yes, I do have the kit so I was incorrect thinking it was a water level problem. I pulled the manual out this morning and checked.

Right now the skimmer is pulled out. I'll clean it good and double check the set up to see if I can find out what was wrong. The cheap replacement I put in there started pulling gunk right away so I definitely have something messed up with the Tunze.

Glad this all came up. I shouldn't have given up on the skimmer without pulling out the manual and double checking the set up.

Have you contacted Aslav regarding the skimmer he has? I've got the same one running on a 90 and for the $ I'm quite pleased with it. As for over skimming; many will say no some will say yes. In part it depends on what you want to keep as sensitive SPS go for the "well skimmed" environment. But to quote the sage just dave who once said; every time I empty my skimmer I'm glad all of that "stuff" is not in my tank.

Bring it by and I'll check it out for you and fix it if needed.

Another point; manufactures notoriously over rate their skimmer capacity. Besides, if you stay in the hobby you'll probably upgrade to a bigger tank.

I havn't really liked any of the things I've read about the css skimmers. They seem to be kind of mediocre for the $100-150 (new)price tag , most of the vids I find of it , have very wet skim , almost like a tea. Not sure if Asalov has the venturi or needle wheel model.
That Tunze would have been a "dream" skimmer for my setup.

I agree totally with luckyfish on this, the CSS, for the money, is a great skimmer and I can pull out some nasty gunk with it. I've used a lot of the mid range needle wheel skimmers (ASM, Euro Reef, Octopus) and it preforms every bit as good as those.

Hey, I think the CSS 220 retails new for around $200 and I'd say it is worth it if you don't mind doing a lot of modifications. The one I'm selling ($50) is already modded with the mesh-wheel mod using enkamat, the venturi is enlarged, the airline is poly 1/4 i.d. tubing, volute enlarged a little, output opened up some, etc. I wouldn't DARE put this thing on a 220! I had it on my 110 for awhile and I could not upgrade soon enough, but I am a firm believer in skimming the crap out of my tank (pun intended). No you can't overskim if you are doing things right. I ran this skimmer on a 26g bowfront w/ a few SPS for 6 months. You better believe there wasn't a thread of algae in that tank, and everything looked awesome...

Edit to add: I skimmed dry with this one, you can adjust it to skim as wet or as dry as you want.

I'll take you up on that.

Well , I told Aslav I would take his modded CSS 220 skimmer.

He called friday the week before Christmas to say he needed to redo the enkamat on the mesh mod. That was the last time I heard from him.

I lost his phone number , tried to send him a pm but he hasn't been on for awhile.

Starting to wonder where he is.
