In sump or hang on? In sump I always go ASM for the price to performance ratio. I have had a ton of success with the Euroreef/ASM design. If money is no object I would go RK2 systems. If it's a hang on I would say go with the remora with a mag 3 and the overflow box. I have never used deltec but I hear they are nice as well.
I have an old turbofloter 1000 that should work fine for a 55g tank. I got it with my first tank and it had been running a 125G.
It is an in sump type.
The remora is not a bad hang on, depending on the size of the tank you might want to add another or just get a sump/overflow so you can add a better skimmer. While the remora is a good hang on it won't compete with the in-sump skimmers IMO. Too many shops in town sell fluvals and if your lucky recommend a hang on skimmer. The sad part is the fluvals they are selling cost a bit more then a nice skimmer like an ASM. It's a lot of money to have a carbon filter later on or worse a 10 dollar garage sale item.
