WTB Pump

I am getting together all the ingredients to build a sump/fuge. All I need now is a pump, macro algae, and sand.

What sort of pumps are a good value for around 500 gph at 3.5 ft. I will have an overflow box on my main tank that'll handle around 500 gph.

Mag 7 should be about 460 if you're looking for a submersible pump. Eheim 1260 I think is about 400 if you want a margin of error...

I have an overflow box that measures about 7 inches by 4 inches and one U tube. I wonder how much flow I need to return? I think it's important to have the capacity to return more to the tank than can be flowed back into the sump. I'll put a ball valve onto my plumbing and direct any "extra" capacity directly back into the sump as to not stress the motor. I don't want to get a huge pump... at the same time, I don't want one too small.

MJ,

Thanks for your help on this. I went with the Ocean Runner 3500. It's rated at 900 GPH at 0ft head pressure. I'm only pumping 3.5 ft. I'll put a "T" on the return and a ball valve to exhaust any extra flow straight back into the sump. This way I have a little more horse power to direct this flow into some sort of reactor or something useful. I believe my overflow is rated at 600gph. Also, I hear you can use a double U tube to increase flow. Any comments on this? Thanks again.

The rating for the overflow is how fast the bulkhead will aloow water to leave the overflow. Getting the water INTO the overflow I know nothing about as I've only done drilled.
