Curious if anyone has a skimmer available for me to buy. Either a Hydor Slim Skim, AquaticLife 115, or Tunze 9002. If you are over an hour away from Norwich I may prefer to pay you on paypal and have it shipped. If i dont get any responses I will likely buy new instead.

No I had been in negotiations with multiple people about a variety of skimmers. But all of them fell through. I was kind of excited because I was talking to a guy about a CPRSR3 but he didnt lie my offer apparently. It is a very old model skimmer but i figured better than the aquaticlife 115. Oh well!
I really want a Tunze 9002 but i cant afford a brand new one of those. My boyfriend just mentioned that he may be willing to help me cut open the hood to get a hang on the back skimmer going. I am buying some media baskets & setting up some chaeto this wknd. Also am getting rid of my snail eating blenny so looking to restock a cleanup crew. You should see my back wall..becoming covered in a film algae. Also considering taking out much of my sandbed (which includes all of the detritus caught in it) & replacing it with a larger grain of sand so it isnt so easily blown around. We have ALOT of work to do with this freaking tank!!! Annoyingggg!!

Are you sure you want to replace the sand bed? Why don't use just add a bag of some larger sand or aragonite to the existing stuff. I would recommend the live bio active stuff... I stir my sand bed every couple of days but only in small areas at a time. It will take me several weeks to stir the whole thing, then I basically just start over... I would try to get the best skimmer that you can afford and make sure it is rated for at least twice your water volume.... In the mean time have you considered adding purigen or some other chemical agent to your filter areas... What are you planning on using for light for the fuge?? I will keep an eye out for any skimmer deals that come along...

Thanks guys! I appreciate your offers of help!

Well, that is why i decided not to just go with the aquaticlife skimmer because i know i need something stronger.

Im also in the process of rehoming my sloppy non-reef safe little piggy fish so that should help to bring things back around to normal after a few water changes and way less feeding and no dead snail parts either lol. Plus getting rid of lots of detritus in the sandbed (or maybe making the sandbed deeper instead?) and a new clean up crew should also help.

I think after rehoming the fish we may add a small goby of some type and maybe a shrimp for him and then we will be all done messing with the stock. ...except coral of course!

What type of bio load are you planning on putting on the tank?? I've looked for some nano style skimmers... A lot of mixed reviews... If you are not looking to go with sps or a heavy bio load then maybe the bio cube skimmer by oceanic is a choice that you could go with.... It's made for the bio cube and its cheap...

I checked eBay there is a tunze 9002 used with a current bid of $50....

Oh another possible choice would be the Eshopps model, a lot of people posted good things about them on other sites... I had an Eshopps PSK-75 on my 25 gallon cube and it worked well. You would have to cut the chamber areas for the pump as it is too wide for the 1st chamber....

Have you thought about a HOB fuge instead of skimmer? It would be easier to mod and will increase your water volume plus I think it would just look better than a skimmer hanging on the back of the tank...

Stock will be two clowns and a cleaner shrimp (already in there) conch & hermits (also alresdy in there) and then add snails, a goby of some kind and maybe a shrimp for him. Would like an anemone eventually. Gonna stick with soft, mushroom, lps, & zoas only. No sps or difficult lps.

I have considered turning my Aquaclear 50 into a hob fuge but i think it may be too small.

I kind of really wanted to switch everything over to my regular 29g tank as that would increase a little water volume. It would also make hanging a skimmer and a fuge off the back much easier, however i dont have lights for it at this time so that kind of kills that idea. Plus i just spent $250 on this BC 4 months ago so i kind of want to see it through.

Im gonna get the chaeto in there and get the sloppy fish out and see how things go nitrate-wise for a while. I also wanted to look for a cheap thin LED to hang on the back of the tank. Wish I had kept the light from my bearded dragon cuz that would have been perfect! Maybe i can find a used one on ebay. Its a slimline uv light.

Anyways?

FWIW I had a Tunze 9002 (kind of lent it out long term), and it was a POS IMO. I thought it was fine while I had it. But when I switched to an SCA 301 I was floored to find out how much more skimmate could be pulled out of my tank. And I had the 9002 for a couple of years, it was well broken in, well tuned. But the SCA 301 experience just demonstrated to me - quite clearly - that it's just a weak skimmer. I ran the two of them side by side, and the SCA pull SO much more skimmate, it was silly.

Actually it was an SC-65, later renamed to SCA 301. Here's a thread that deals with them, along with some other models from that same vendor. The vendor sells them on Ebay.

If you've got a nano, these will probably not help you, since they need to be located in a sump. While I LOVE my SCA 301, I was not bringing it up so much as an endorsement of that skimmer, as I was making sure that you knew that there is good reason to believe that the 9002 is pretty lame in its skimming ability. Or lack thereof.

I meant to ask you how you were liking it. Its working well for you? Are you getting decent skimmate?

*edit: whats ur stocklist right now?

I went without the hood on my bc29 and it opened up a lot of possibilities. This may be a good option for you here's a pic of mine:

I really do like it. I get a full cup of dark yellow skimmate every other day.
Right now our fish are:
Photon clown pair
Yasha Goby pair
Yellow Clown Goby
Purple Firefish

I would like to add one or two more small fish. But i think first I will get the Aquaticlife because altho some ppl say its not a quality product, i think for the price it cant be beat....unless i was going to do a used hob.

Anyways, what do you all think about a 1g water change 6 days a week with a 3-5g wc on the 7th day? Would it make any difference in nutrient levels do you think?

Well the reviews on the Aquatic Life 115 are mixed to say the least... The only way to find out is to try it for yourself.

With the water changes.... I think any water change is going to affect the levels in your tank. The question is will the level change be significant enough to even worry about doing a daily 1 gal WC.... I think you would have to try it and test accordingly. It would be a PITA to do a daily WC and it not do anything to your Chemistry levels... IMHO
