I'm looking to buy a good used submersable pump rated 200+ GPH. I have an 80 Gal. setup. What is the rule of thumb on return pumps? 2-3 times the total volume per hour?

Guess I'm looking for a 400 GPH pump. Anyone have one laying around?

If you are looking for 400 gal/hr then you need to get a pump rated at 600 gal/hr because the head pressure will knock it down to about 400. Sorry to throw in another monkey wrench

Maybe something closer to ~500gph at the height of your return. The max flow rate through a standard 1" bulkhead is ~600 gph. So that's about as much water flow a normal overflow can take. for example a Rio 2500 does ~780gph at 0ft and at 4ft ~ 520gph with 3/4" id tubing. But personally I hate Rio's, but there's a lot of used ones out there. Maybe a mag drive 7.

Thanks for the info Tom n James. I did a little research and a 700 gph pump should give me 450ish gph with my return being about 4 feet tall. I'm thinking that should work well with my 1" overflow drain and 3/4" return.

I would go with a Laguna pump, very quiet efficient and powerful. A Laguna maxflow 600 would be great.

The Mag 700 on BRS is under $100. Decent price for a quality pump.

I would rate laguna much better than mag pumps hands down. The laguna 600 is about $80-90
I've also heard that the laguna body is the same desing as the red dragon.

From what I've experienced the Mag pumps are pretty noisy. I have a Eheim 1262 and its super quiet! Its deff a little on the expensive side, I think it was $170 but my tank is right behind my couch about 5 feet from me and I really didn't want to hear anything, and with the Eheim, I can only hear it if I open my stand, even then you cant differentiate that noise from anything else under there. I also run an Eheim 1260 for my calcium reactor, super quiet.

The eheim 1260 is rated at 65 watt but the laguna is only at 32 watt, much more efficient

Tom makes an excellent point. The Hagan Laguna is way more energy efficient. Plus it has a longer cord. And it's super easy to get parts for them.

So all this talking about eheim pumps but no one had one for sale? I don't want to hear it later for using a rio pump hope to buy one soon, also really want to buy an MP10

The Hagan Laguna seems to be a good pump at a great price, but I only have a 5" wide space in my sump for the return pump (because of a baffle). The Laguna looks like it would need a good size footprint to work well. I also like the pumps that have a straight intake port. It makes it easier to control air bubbles, and it has other advantages. I'm looking at the Eheim 1262, but just can't seem to pull the trigger....
