xenia and amquel????

My female ocellaris apparently killed the male ocellaris and I couldn't find it to remove him, due to that I get a small ammonia spike of 0.23 ppm or less. I added some amquel and 15 gals water change and the next day my xenia shrinked, It was doing great since before adding the amquel. Does anybody had a problem like this with xenias? Will they recuperate?
