if you have no PO4 they typically die.

just about impossible to achieve. Most of the time it is increased phosphate that is the xenia killer. Some of the best looking Xenia colonies that I have seen were grown in SPS tanks under bright lights and very high water quality.

I had trouble keeping Xenia for years untill I bought a piece of rock with some Xenia on it. Since then the Xenia and Kenya Tree grow like weeds. The only change I made was a new T5 hood instead of my pc fixture. Ph is 8.2 Alk 9, Ni 0, Phos 0, cal is low, about 320.

myphosphate and nitrate test at 0. which does not mean that it is not there but it must be very low and it thrives in this tank.

I have the captive-grown "heteroxenia" from LiveAquaria. My N03 is undetectable on an API kit, PO4 is <0.03. pH is 8.2, water temp is 77. Alk is 8.5, Ca is 420.

It isn't growing like a weed, but it isn't dying off either.

IMO, they just like stable water parameters. I used to have them like weeds and the tank salinity was above 1.033 and I hard do water change. Maybe once every six months or something. My bro. had them for a while too and he never did any water change and no dosing of any kind. He even top off with crappy tab water. Now I can't grow any xenias...I am lost.

It took me three years before I was able to keep it alive. And now it grows like crazy.I know they like mhs,and I do 25 gallon water changes every two weeks on my 120.All I can say is don't give up.

i know it's an old post, i have pretty weak sunbrite led's and cruddy water parameters since i've been gone and left the maintenance to my wife. since i've been gone, my xenia grew bigger and split. by the pictures my wife sent me, the split seemed to move toward the 10k lighting higher up in the tank.
nitrates 5.0, nitrites 0, phos 0, water change every 3-4 weeks, dry skimming when i left then changed to wet skimming a day ago since cyanobacteria and grape caulerpa started growing out of nowhere.

Calcium is 450, alk and mag is unknown because I rarely test for them. SG is 1.025, phosphates and nitrates are undetectable. I occasionally add some iodine. This xenia has been growing real nicely and I have another good size frag of it on the other side of my tank.

this is what I ended up with.Never again will I put this stuff in my tank.Water I kept it in was at 1.025 and I never did changes. So,I don't think they need pristine water. And,I was using 4x110w vhos at the time

wow that's ****in insane. I never used to change the water in my old 20 gallon and coral spread everywhere on the glass. Now i change the water bi weekly in my 75 and it keeps my corals from overgrowing. I've had these xenia for about one year.

I take it that Xenia is prettuy darn hardy? I bought some yesterday moved it around in my tank and it stopped pulsing. I hope when I get home today it`s fine.
