xenia questions

I just got four frags of xenia from a local reefer here in Dallas (thanks Jose!). I put them in the tank and I got a couple fo them to stay in the holes in the rocks. the other two I had to hold the ends of the stalks down with a shell. My new koralia 2 is making some major flow. Anyway my question is will these things attach themselves soon like an anenome does? Also....I know xenias love iodine but what else should I be using? Do they need anything special to eat or do they just filter feed? Sorry for the noob questions....I just recently got interested in corals.

They will attach given a little time, though not like an anemone does. They dont have the muscular foot that anemones do- they attach simply by growing over the rockwork. If you put them in a spot with moderate to low water flow, they should attach in a couple days (Xenia grows very quickly).

I wouldnt suggest any additives specifically for the Xenia. If you are doing regular water changes on there, the trace elements coming in with the salt mix should be enough to keep most things in check for you.

Keep an eye on pH and KH, as Xenia seems to be more sensitive to those than many other corals. There are numerous reports that Xenia will stop pulsing properly if your pH drops much below 8.3, though Ive heard arguments for and against that though (IME, I think there is something to that idea).

Good luck with it.

xenias are always a good indicator that something is wrong if they aint looking right. plus after they attach make the flow a lil stronger where they are.. there stalk will thicken up and make them grow more.. mine grows like weeds!

not ot hi jack here Dave, but my tank is pretty high flow. Is there a way to attach them in high flow? I could place them in my refugium for a week and let them attach there?

That would work fine. You can also rubberband Xenia to some rubble, but care must be taken to not rubberband it too tightly, as the rubberband can cut through the Xenia.

you could also drop them in a cup with the rubble on the bottom. in a couple days it should be attached to one of the pieces of rubble.

Mine pulse and my pH has been a bit low for the last few days, around 8.0, so I wish it were true on my tank, as that would be a great indicator of low pH.
