Xenia trouble

a 50 percent water change would be what i do first.if the coral looks better do another in 2 days.i never had problems with xenia as long as parameters, and temp is controlled.they can shrivel if you change sg too quickly.fish and shrimp do pick at them but aside from that they are hardy.
I would never do that much water change it would shock your tank. You would have to have exact macth on water parameters. I believe thats next to impossible.

From my expirence with xenia (2 years) They do alot better in an established tank. Iodine is not dangerous if used with cuation, and it does work its like a "cleanser". They use it to multiply. Iodine can also help your soft corals heal if you frag them like a toadstool. In my view xenia also are the test kit for iodine as well, because when my pulse at a slower rate I noticed Iodine levels have dropped. One more thing I also noticed xenia like daylight so place them high or in an area of bright light. Thanks.

Do you have any evidence to back these claims?

Frankie, what would you consider as established?

One year? Two months with previously cycled live rock?

I have heard this claim before and I would very much like to know what you mean by that.

Thanks for the great info BTW.

James, I took Frankie's notes as more anecdotal and based on experience. Sounds reasonable.

Ill give my 2 cents.. this is what mine likes... place high in the tank... I have a roating deflector on my power head that is about ten inches from them.. mine likes current but not straight on.. they really perk up when I dose with zoomax drops.. as for temp... 80 or higher would scare me.. I keep mine at 78. Good luck

I have xenia growing like mad, I keep it at 78°, dose the two part ESV, and about once a month I put a capful of Sea Chem Reef Plus. I have power compacts and thay are mostly in the bottom of the tank, but they climb (walk) up the rocks themselves. Mine never stop pulsing, they are the white pom pom type. I took some to the lfs a while ago in a plastic container and they pulsed all the way over there. 55 gallon tank and about 75 gallon overall in the system and I change 5 gallons every week.

i got a 75g tank and it's loaded with xenia. I bought 2 at first and now they are all over the tank growing over everything.I'm upgrading to a 120 SPS so i'm fraging and selling all to the LFS. I would like to get rid of them but they just keep coming back.

I don't really understand why, but my pulsing xenia stopped pulsing. They otherwise look healthy, but they just sort of flow with the water now. They are even still growing, just not pulsing. It's probably been three weeks or so...

everybody's input here is right...it requires all combinations mentioned here.

-trace elements
-iodine
-good water flow but not too strong, oscillating device helps
-clean water, disagree about the dirty water part
-oxygenated water, usually is automatic with good flow
-of course the obvious salinity, ph, etc.
-moderate lighting is sufficient
-REAL IMPORTANT...TEMPERATURE!!! SHOULD BE 74deg. to 78deg

hope i didnt forget anything....

78deg to grow xenia? I run my tank at 83 and throw away about 3-5 stalks a week.

In one of the previous posts it looked like that xenia was really close to the GSP. A GSP will kill a xenia in no time.

Ok I have some pink xenia and I have the opposite problem, mine pulse like crazy but seem like they are melting? They are half the size they were a week ago stay closed alot, but even the closed ones try to pulse and the open ones pulse like mad? I dont get it params are good they are at the top of my 12g nc and in good flow. My other corals look great and my green hairy mushroom has split twice in the last two weeks!

gsp kill xenia and i beleive xenia melts when it is in old water it does not mind a little dirtier water but seem to do well in my tank nomatter what i do i had it all melt once happened in 4 hours went from perfect to horrible very quickly

you don't need to add trace elements or iodine.
