xenia xenia xenia...

they don't need that much light either

i was going to disagree w/ you at first and say that i've got this stuff right under 2x175 mh's

but then i remembered that i had some growing in my sump ( had no where to put a frag of it) and the only light it had was an incandescent bulb!

With all due respect to the above posters, I don't think anyone knows why Xenia flourishes in some tanks, and dies in others.

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with temperature, light, pH, and certainly not anything as silly as Iodine dosing.

I have had a few differant types in my tank now for a few months and they just don't grow and all my water checks out great temp light everything, my buddy with a smaler tank and less light and supper high phosphates took some of the same frags I got and they are growing and looking great in his tank. I have researched and asked many different LFS and no one seams to know why. Its to bad cuz I really like the way they look when they are big and pulsing.

my xenia

my xenia

my xenia took about a week to finally get pulsing after putting it in my tank. they dont pulse that much in strong current so i put mine on the bottom of the tank with low flow till it started getting full polyp extension which took about 5 days. it was really shriveled before that though, id say about one fifth its original size. now i have it on my LR and is in a area of moderate flow and is doing great. grows fast thoguh. i do dose iodine and skim 24/7...its about half way up a 14" tank with PC lighting...

I've never seen a shred of evidence that xenia need iodine or any tanks need it for that matter. I never dosed anything except calcium, alkalinity and magnesium supplements and did bi monthly water changes and It would completley cover my tank every couple of weeks.
It grew so fast that I couldn't keep it in check and could hardly even give it away.

This has been the conclusion I came to as well.

No one knows for sure and no one agrees.

This also seems to apply to the question of why xenia pulses.

I have the same problem. Mine went in, was happy, then was sad (I have a thread about it elsewhere..)

Question though. Well 2 actually.

Can the pulsing xenia move itself? It was glued to a rock, but it looks like its trying to break loose maybe?

Can the xenia frag itself? It looks like maybe the foot could still be in place, but hihger up laid against the rock and attached? I cant tell.

when my xenia gets long enough it bends over and attaches wherever it touches another rock, then over the course of a week or two will seperate itself so that it is two seperate colnies on two seperate rocks, and this all happens again. That is why i trim them befr ethey get that long.

At times pong, check the pH too, they like it at 8.5. wish you were here because I will give you some from my tank. I have the pacific ones and they are hardy, cant kill them, they multiply like hair.

The xenia in my tank grows like a weed. I need to trim it alot to keep it in check. Yes, it can attach itself to whatever it wants also like near by rocks, the glass anything. Also I find that the flow makes no difference because I have some in medium flow areas and some that are in very high flow areas. It all seems to want to move up higher in my tank for more light though even though I run 2 250w metal halides? I agree that xenia grows and acts different in all tanks.

i think this likes higher ph... i started dosing kalk again and it seems that it is growing more... it is not limp now

Okay, I think Xenia like water that is no so perfect and light thats not too harsh. I can back this up from my experiance. I had a 10K 250w MH with water that was far from right! My Xenia loved it a lot! Then I wanted to keep some SPS, so I got my water prams spot on, and upgraded my bulb to a 20K. Lets just say my Xenia does not like it as much! Here are some before and after pics.

Cool pix man. Answer me this, i recently purchased my first Xenia. It has been doing fabulous for about 3 months now. i have noticed however that some of the little hands ( as my wife calls them) seem to just fall off. There are smaller ones that are growing around the base of the head. Is this typical of Xenias or do i need to change something

something must be going on because I have had xenia since I started reefing 5 years ago and the only time they fell off was when My tank hit 88 degrees and they died. Everyones tank is different and xenia can thrive in numerous different tanks at differnet parameters. I have a 25 gallon right now sps dominted with pulsing xenia that grows like crazy and my water is spot on. phos/nitrates almost always undetectable. My temp is always at 80 -82. I think the guy that first posted temp is fine but his nitrates are way too high.

Nice pics, I sometimes wonder if they just need some time. But on another note I recently pulled some pulsating xenia out of the tank and grabed it with my hands not thinking and two days later I noticed that the smile (i guess) has turned one of my montipora white. Thats my hypothesis atleast. Anyone else come into these issues?

a good stable ph and iodine dosing have worked for me. started with a tiny stalk now i can't get rid of the stuff.. but i like it so whatever.
