Xenia

I had one years ago and it did well for 6 months never really spread then it just melted away. I just bought one yesterday ,we will see how it goes! Does it really bother other corals or does it just encroach upon their real estate?

I have personally seen it grow directly onto lps (stalk of a duncan) and would imagine they would grow directly onto and kill sps.

Mine grow like wild, by luck without knowing it i placed it on a highest rock on the side. I don't mind when it gets on the glass and starts climbing; i actually find it the easiest way of getting them off. Every few weeks a stalk or two gets taken out this way and it keeps it pretty under control. Not to mention my RBTA decided it liked being in the middle of the colony =).

I had xenia with my live rock from the previous owner in my tank on day 1. They survived the initial startup of my tank and everything. . (all the corals did) but the rock was from a 2 year old tank.. So, anyways, It doesn't matter what I dod, the xenia are everywhere... LOL. I pruned them just a week ago. Completely removing 1 entire colony of them from one of my rocks. In that week, 2 or 3 heads are in two different sand bed locations. The spot I removed them from my rock has a portion of the colony growing back, and the one colony I left continues to expand.

This all in a 5 week period!!! Hate to say it, but, I don't think weeds grow and spread that fast!!!

I started with a small piece with about 3 stalks, within the last 2 years, they took over my tank. I have given some away to friends and none of them can keep them alive. I try to sell them but noone is interested. I have one piece of rock which is high up, that is covered in them, but I constantly prune them from the rest of the tank. I have tried everything to get rid of them but they come back. Think twice before you do it.

I've had my xenia for a couple of months...I put it up on a pretty high rock and it seems to be doing well. It is very beautiful and I haven't had any problems with it taking over (so far). It has grown quite a bit, but not so much that I feel I can't control it with a bit of careful pruning. Good luck!
