Xenia

I really want to keep some xenia in my 10 gallon softie/lps reef, but I've tried it before in my 2.5 gallon pico and had it slowly die. Yes, I know it can be a pest/weed/etc....I still really want it:rollface:. I know of a few local reefers who have extra, but I don't want to spend the $1-5 if it's too soon to put it in. I had one lfs person tell me it was fine, yada yada and sold it to me as one of my first corals and another at a different store said to wait until the tank had been setup at least 6 months[I set the 10 gallon up at the end of feb.]. I'd really like it to do well/thrive, and since my good friend the search button is MIA, can anyone help?
Thanks!

stay away from xenia, it can reach plague proportions.

i want plague portions, lol! if you're tired of it............. :P
the idea for this tank is a bit like a garden, and i happen to like most of the easy 'weed' corals, so that's where i'm going :)

If you want xenia go for it! Personally I love mine, weed or not.

As far as will it survive - has your tank finished cycling? Are your water parameters stable? Do you have any fish?

At just over a month I'd probably give the tank a little longer to stabilize but you know your tank parameters so that is your call. Xenia can be finicky, typically it grows great but sometimes it just melts away so until you know your tank is stable you may want to go slow and just get a small piece.

Just my 2 cents.

one perc clown is the only fish, this tank was a upgrade, so it had a pretty fast cycle, and the params have been pretty much the same from the get-go. thanks for the 2 cents :)

xenia is weird. if your xenia is acting normal then something is wrong with it.

i got 3 frags of xenia for my other tank. the first one melted over night, the second one produced two more stocks then let go of the rocks and got shredded, and the frag now is growing like mad. from 2 stocks to 8 in i think two months.

i also like the weedy corals that many consider plagues (yellow polyps, gsp, xenia, cloves, etc). i think your fine at 1 month.

I have xenia that grow like mad. Not a big deal to just take a scissors and cut them back when they need it. I would also say go for it if you like it!

if your going to get xenia try going for red sea pom pom xenia it doesnt seem to grow as fast along with its really easy to trim + i personally think it looks alot cooler then regular
