xtrstangx's 120g BB thread

Alright, I see what you are saying. I may wait for a few more opinions and if it won't work, I'll scrap the SCWD idea.

actually just make the tee you have the scwd hooked to be above the point of the rest of the exits. Then you will have a straight shot into the scwd and could use the ball valve to throttle it back.

well, your right kind of, but not fully. That water coming out of the pump is going to go wherever it can with the water pushing from behind it some water will travel down that side pipe. just think of when people put a T in their return line and redirect back into the fuge, sort of the same thing only he is going to an SCWD and they are going to a sump/fuge. i think the design will work fine.

Head pressure helps with that tee back to the fuge, the reason you have to have a tee on is due to the fact that if you allowed full flow most of your flow would go right back in the fuge (least path of resistance). Anyway my point is if you have 4 open 1" pipes your not going to build enough pressure to operate a scwd that is plumbed off to the side.

Alright, I scrapped the SCWD. Maybe later on I'll put Maxi-jets in the rockwork on a cheap wavemaker, who knows?

So far this is my plan for the back of the tank:
backpanel.gif

There is a 2" bulkhead for the intake to the Dart with 6 outputs. I was going to do 2 1-1/2" holes in the bottom, one for a drain and one for the return.

Is the drawing very concise?

I brought the drawings to the fish store (he's ordering my tank along with 20+ for his new store.. so I am getting the tank for cheap, even though its custom).

He wasn't sure how the external overflow worked and thought that I should add more details. So hopefully I'll order my tank sometime this week. I'll post more drawings in this thread later, hopefully.

Yep. He's going to put in the order sometime later this week (at the end of the month).

Also went over the sump idea with my dad. The tank is going on a different wall than originally planned, but it'll be nice cause my fish room will be a fish room.

Before, I was going to put my sump in the storage room, but now we're probably going to take 60 sq ft (not much, but better than nothing) and make a true fish room. Going to be pretty much directly below the display and I'll have 4 feet of counterspace (with a big 32" double sink). I'll be able to have a 32g bucket for FW topoff and a 32g bucket for SW mixing. The SW mixing bucket will probably be plumbed to a Mag 7..

I'll be able to turn a valve and drain out 10-20g into the sink, then flip a switch and put 10-20g into the tank from the Mag 7. This should make for really fast water changes.

What do you guys think for a skimmer? ASM G-3 or an ASM G-4X?

I'm going to get an "I support RC" soon.. :D

Let me know which ASM you decide to go with... In regards to the PM I sent you.

Will for sure. I'm thinking the ASM G3 is probably the right one, going to do some more searches after work and I'll let you know.

These are the finals plans I emailed in.

I'm playing around with AutoCAD and making a 3D view of the tank. Its fun, but sometimes my OSNAP messes up and puts all my holes on the front panel, wasting 5 minutes of work. I'm having to do all these drawings in my AutoCAD class at school which only lasts for about a hour.

Did everyone but Bomber jump ship when I said BB?

I don't think that BB is the *best* system possible. Neither is a DSB/SSB, IMO. They all have their drawbacks. Perhaps in 15 years, someone will think of the best system.

I called the fish store today and made sure they got my email. The owner wasn't in, so I'll be getting a call in a few days to go over the final details.

Bomber has been gone for a while, I guess RC had a 'cleaning out' party and he was made unwelcome from what I understand. I may be wrong -- oh well.

I sure did enjoy RC alot more reading all of his posts, wish he had some sort of a blog though, I learned quite a bit from him.

Doh! I meant to say "Did everyone but elephen jump ship when I said BB?"

As far as a time frame.. I imagine the tank will be 4-6 weeks, but I'll make sure to take lots of pics as we set up the fish room and work on the stand.

Heres the 3D view that I did. Some of the things look like they don't match up right, don't know why though. Perhaps I needed to regenerate the model. This is also a "shade", not a rendering. I haven't had the oppertunity to do a rendering yet.

Looks cool. Have you decided the details on your closed loop?

I went to Lowes tonight and spent $150 on plumbing parts to plumb my 2 closed loops on my 120... And low and behold, I forgot 1.5" couplings and they were out of 1.5" to 1" slip/slip bushings.

Man, plumbing is expensive! I'm probably going to spend as much on my plumbing as I will on my tank (between bulkheads, spaflex, DUBV, and all the fittings.

I think I am just going to go with the 5 1" returns off the Dart. I won't add a Squirt or similar now... perhaps in the future. On some of the returns, I will put 135Ã"šÃ‚º on them to bounce off the glass/bottom.

http://usplastics.com has HDPE (aka Starboard). It is a consistent white color and is considerably cheaper than http://cuttingboardcompany.com ... so I'm going to go with that. Especially cause I can cut it to size with wood bits on our table saw.

I can't wait to start work on my fish room. I'll post some before pics soon.

Picked up my sump tonight. Its a big 75g and is being soaked with vinegar as we speak. I think I might take a picture tomorrow. Tomorrow I need to go to the fish store and get more food.. also gotta check and make sure he ordered the tank.

Perhaps I should get the name of the thread changed??
