it's a goniopora, not the best coral as a first choice, hard to keep alive unless water params are ideal. some people have kept them with success though. good luck.

dag nammit. the lady at the lfs said it would make a great first coral. there were a lot there so why'd she say that. oh we'll see how we go. Do they need high calcuim levels and direct feeding at all.

Goniopora corals are near impossible to keep, there living conditons in the wild are very extreme. The water they live in is so murky or dirty that divers have trouble seeing in front of them. The water currents they live in are very strong and turbulent.
95% of these corals die within months to a years time in captivity.
Having Ideal water conditions is only a very small percentage of keeping them. They usually end up dying from the corals tissue receding from disease. Once that happens there is nothing you can do to save it.
They need expert care, and even then they usually dont seem to fair to well.
They do need to be fed Phytoplankton 2 to 3 times a week, be in a high flow area and high lighting.

I believe the LFS told you it would be a good first coral just to make a buck.
Anyway good luck with it, I hope it does well.

I had one when I first started this hobby and sisnt know about them. It did well for about 9 months and then got the receding tissue and it slowly died. I forgot the name of the disease but once it gets it there is no hope for it.

Borneman suggests keeping them in Skimmerless tanks. They need lots & lots of plankton to survive. Most of our tanks starve them to death.

Whoever said that was a good beginer's coral needs to be sent to a reefer re-education camp. Hopefully, it was not just to make a sale..

if you just bought him take him back. The lfs had alot of them and thats why she told you that or she really isn't educated about them

Trust me. Take it back or you will be unhappy later on. It is the farthest thing from a beginner coral that I can think of (I bought one and within 2 days I took it back). Try a torch coral or something.

Two tips:

NEVER trust the LFS!

NEVER buy corals if you don't know what they are or need. Ask them to hold it for you til you get home and research it.

I couldn't agree more with this. Truth be told she probably doesn't have a clue how easy it is and tells everybody the same thing.

Usmcsgt,

How long have you had it? Many survive a year & then just DIE. In fact most do this, if it hasn't been a year, it hasn't been a success. Not trying to argue, just informing you what people's experience eith 'em are.
They shouldn't be sold IMO.

It is a living thing that has a skeleton surrounded by delicate tissue. It comes from the ocean.

Bad first coral, BAD! Just kidding, but it is a pretty tough one... can be hit and miss like elegance; I wish I could have words with your LFS.

I agree with Sheol, too, that's what I was thinking when usmc said his is doing well... tank has only been up for 1 year. These corals can take a while to die. My LFS won't let beginners touch it.
