Yeast/Rotifers

I'm looking at possibly using yeast or V8 juice to keep a Rotifer culture alive and growing. I would rather use yeast because it's easier to handle and, well, "live". But beyond "bread yeast", what type am I looking at? There are many different types of bread yeast. Hopefully it's something that my wife uses often.

The only commonly available yeasts I know of are bread yeasts and brewers yeast. While there are many strains of each, I doubt it would make much of difference in feeding rots. Just keep in mind, strictly yeast fed rots are not nearly as nutritious as ones also fed phyto ;)

Common yeast,(bread or beer,I think they´re the same) is enough for raising rots, better with some Spirulina added. There is also Torula marine yeast in health stores. There are also prepared mixes designed for feeding rots, like Rotirich or Culture Selco. But I agree with billsreef that the best food for nutritionally rich rots is phyto.Commecial products like IA are the most practical.Hope that helps.

Not sure if there's a difference in terms of feeding rots, but there is a heck of a difference for brewing beer ;)

Saccaromyces cerevisae, same one.Cerveza meaning you know what in Spanish, ever tasted "Corona"?
No wonder yeast fed rots swim in circles!:D

Might be the same species, but you'd be amazed at the different strains and very different behaviors and effects on a brew. I'd never pitch bread yeast into my wort ;) Heck, in a few minutes I've got some good ale yeast to pitch to start of my next batch of beer

Thanks for the information. It really does help. I don't plan on feeding yeast fed rots to larvae, but just keep the culture alive and going until I get enough backup phytoplankton. I was given a culture of Rotifers weeks before my phytoplankton was ready. I just don't want my culture to crash first.
