Yellow Candy Hogfish and Red Banded Goby questions!!

Whats up guys, I have a 28 Bowfront right now containing a Red banded goby, purple firefish, and bangaii cardinal. My question on the Red Banded is it seems to only come out when lights are out and feeding. Is this normal? It seems like waste of a fish to me!! It was in a 6 NC with the firefish until recently so I will give it time..( I know to small of a tank!).. Anyway my other question on the Hogfish is, is the 28 bowfront large enough for this fish? What experiences do people have with this fish...they are reef safe correct? !! Thanks!!

If yes than no a 29gal tank isn't large enough to house one. A 55-75gal tank should be the smallest as this fish is pretty active and does get to be a good size. They're very hardy and usually do very well. They are jumpers so you need to make sure the top is tight. They're pretty reef safe as they would bother any corals and other inverts.

I have a Candy in my 125 and it uses every bit of space in that tank. I would not place one in a 28

These fish only get to around 3.5-4" in total length. While I agree a 55-75 would be better, they can still do quite well in smaller tanks, though 28 is a bit too small.

The fish is very active and any tank less than a 55gal tank would be to small. 3"-4" is not that small of a fish specially one that is an active and by placing it in a small tank the chance of it jumping are greater. I had one in my 58gal reef and I though that was to small, so anything less wouldn't do.

I agree with marrone..mine swims every square inch of my 125 and I had to place eggcrate on the top because he has went carpet surfing 4 times A 28 gallon is not suitable for this very active fish

Out of experience, the size of the tank has nothing to do with the proportionality of a fish jumping. If provided with extra swimming room, slightly smaller tanks by volume (not necessarily length and not completely packed with liverock) will still work for this species. Although, I will agree that larger tanks are best for this and other more active species.

This is not a small fish, don't get fooled by the 3"-4" as it's a good size fish and is very active. By putting this fish in a small tank you'll be cramming in it and increase the chance the fish could jump out of the tank. This fish isn't like one of the Dottyback/Basslet who would be fine in a small tank.

Thanks!! This is why I asked these questions! Now what about the Red banded? Also how many fish would you reccomend, right now theres the bangaii, firefish, and the redbanded!! Would a coral beauty or flame be okay? It is a reef so they have me worried! What fish would you add to it if any! Thanks!!

3!!! Ahh I guess I am going to have to settle for it.......I just noticed the redbanded goby is out hiding behind the powerhead today..>making progress I assume. Maybe one of these days he will begin swimming out in the open.
