Yellow Fiji Leather issues...

ok. i think i'm gonna rotate the base just a little. cause i think maybe a snail nudged it forward. every night after lights out, he retracts and is up off the rock. so it's getting into a pretty regular cycle for lights, which i take as a good sign.

and it's not doin the curl UNDER anymore. only the curl UP. now if i could get some polyp extension started, i'd be a happy little camper.

i will take some pics tomorrow. just to keep this thread interesting.

Good luck buddy and keep us posted. I think your lights are good, but you may want to increase your flow over it a little. Granted I don't have that species, but the two leathers I have seem to like a good bit of gentle movement. If nothing else, it will help with shedding. I still think you are going to be okay.

ok, i'll let it ride. i won't mess with it's rock or anything. maybe move the MP10 back down a little bit, and just wait. here's hoping for some polyp extension!! if i could just get 2 or 3 to BARELY peek out, it'd make my day.

and concurring is always a good thing!

thanks again for checking in and keeping me positive guys. really appreciate it.

ok....so i just witnessed my coral beauty "nip" at the yellow leather.......

now what?

he didn't like BITE IT, just kinda kissed it, probably to see if it was something he could eat. will this keep the yellow retracted? man, i'm sick of this thing laying on my rocks all dang day.

also, my polyps on my regular toadstool leather, they never fan out on the end. they always stay up, like in the picture i have in this thread of it. is that normal? i was doing some surfing and saw a few that looked like they were fanned clear out.

.....but it was short lived. i took that before i went to my local reef club meeting and when i got home around 545 they were all back in. but we are making progress!

i will see what it does tomorrow. that was full lights for an 11 hour photo period....at around 2:45. Lights come on at 10AM.

If your coral beauty is nipping often, even just to "taste" it, it will most likely stay retracted. Glad to see the polyps starting to show--always a good sign.

As far as you other leather, I wouldn't really worry about it either. My yellow leather still does that but it is growing well and is now the size of a fifty cent piece (this is the one that almost died on me). My green leather (size of sandwich plate now) has awesome PE, so it may be a species thing or a maturity thing--the older they get=more established=better PE. Just a thought.

ok, so do you think the polyp extension is directly related to light? cause most of the polyp extension is happening on the top portion of the coral that is getting the most light.

or is polyp extension related to flow?

or is it unrelated to which areas of the coral are "happy"? meaning, it's gonna put all it's polyps out if it's happy, and none of them out if it's unhappy?

FWIW, when I got my Sinularia (which is a much easier species to care for) it looked like utter garbage for 6-7 days and I thought it was toast. Then one morning its skin was sloughing off and it was in glorious full polyp extension.

Just be patient with it. As long as its not literally melting, it will most likely be just fine. Glad so see you are seeing some PE.

well i rotated the base. and the stupid thing is falling back over the other way now!!

this is really agitating me. think there is something living in the base of it? some sort of coralvore that hollows it out? cause it seems like it just can't hold itself up. i think maybe i should cut about half the base off. the funky looking stuff. see what happens.

i'm just tired of it laying on the rocks. its starting to get a little damage from the high spots of the rocks it's up against.

here's a pic.

funny you should ask. today it's looking the best it has. got a pic, but it's not up to par. but it's the best i could do in the time i had.

polyps are starting to put teeny tiny fingers out the ends. still has a wrinkle in the base and doesn't stand up straight, and still has the funk on the base. but i think it's pretty happy so far. little improvements day by day. polyps go back in when it's dark. come out in the light. so it's getting into a regular light cycle.

just thought i should post up an "update pic" of my fiji. It's doing quite well and is probably my favorite coral. So if you have one and are worried about it, just leave it alone and just let it get used to life in your tank. :)

i did jump back over to MH/T5.

Looks from the pic you posted two pictures ago it may have molted/shed. Pretty standard faire for leathers, mine did the same and didn't show polyps for a week after. Glad to see things are kickin' up for you.
