Hi Everyone,
I purchased a Yellow Fiji Leather a week ago and he's not lookin too happy right now. He stays closed up quite a bit of the time, esp when it's feeding time. He is shedding some mucus, or there is a stringy like mucus substance coming from him. Just wondering if you know what might be going on? He's in good flow and light. Here is a picture.

This behavior is quite normal for leathers. After they recede they tend to come back even better than before. What are your water params and lighting specs to rule out any other possibilities?

Normal for leathers. can you get a pic oof the mucus strings? Probably not mucus but more likely a type oof jelly strand.
BTW do you like your quiet one 300 pump. I am looking into buying one but I notice you wrote need new return pump afer it.
Thanks

Hi,
You sent me a link to a sea slug forum. ;-) I didn't know how to explain those strands. Maybe more like a waxy substance. I will try to get another picture later today. Today is actually my maintenance day. I did test the water though and everything is normal. Ammonia is 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, PH 8.4, SG is normal.
I put I'd like a new return pump because in the beginning this thing would not start up right away. It still does this on occasion after I get done cleaning it. I'd really like an Ehiem pump. I just don't know if I trust the Quiet Ones. I tried a QO on my closed loop at first and talk about disaster! AHH! It was so loud. I wanted to mount the QO return externally to keep heat down, but I had to change it and put it in the sump because it was too loud. =/ It's very very quiet in the sump though.
Is that your clam on your avatar? That is beautiful. Where did you get it?

I am actually having the same problem with my leather...at night it releases these white strands that look like a silky substance. It only happens after the lights go out. It looks great during the day with full poly extension.

I heard it was from stress but everything else in my tank is looking great...I am curious to hear from other as to what this problem may be.

What is youir PH righ before your lights turn off, what is your pH before your lights come back on in the morning? My guess is that you are getting wide ph swings. Yellow Fiji leathers are some of the most fragile leathers, very touchy until they settle in.

I havn't tested like that before...the last time I did run the Ph test it was right at 8.2....now that you mention that I will run the test when the lights go out..and then when I turn them back on and see if I am having crazy PH swings.

They hide their bodies inside the leather and just extend their food catching tenticle out. The silky like tenticles are from this animal living inside your leather. I have hundreds of them and they do no harm.
