i received a yellow fiji leather along with a trachy and a xenia a few days ago.i drip acclamated all three together for about 1 1/2 and put them in my tank.the brain and the xenia are doing great.the leather is still yellow and responds to the lights(130 w of 10k and 130 w actinic, power compacts over a 60 g)the thing is it is detaching, ripping if you will away from the rock it was mounted on.from all my research leathers dont move themselves do they?there is a little browning where it is tearing.i need advice on what to do.thanks guys.

look for signs of brown jelly. Your right, they dont usually move that quick. If its base looks at all damaged, slimy, ripped I would frag that portion away, and let it heal/reattach.

That's not good. It's been a long time since I've dealt with it, if memory serves it's "rot". When it happened to me I cut out the infected area, going into healthy tissue. Can't recall much more than that, sorry.

i just really got a good look.thers no real browning iwas wrong.but its definantly tearing.i dont know how but its torn.so i should make a clean cut above the tear.if i fix it in a hole it will reattach by itself correct.thanks again.

Your yellow leather doesn't like to be bumped, squeezed, or handled. They also like high intensity indirect lighting, along with good flow. From what you have said, it sounds like it's reproducing. A picture would be nice, and helpful. This species of leather requires pristine water conditions, to flourish. I would not recommend it for the beginner hobbyist. I also would leave it alone and watch it closely.

Pictured below is my yellow, it started as a small 2"-3" frag and has split several times. Now it's about 12'-13" across, and if you look closely up can see what looks like tearing on the lower right. That is splitting again to form a new head...

Happy Reefing

The yellow Fiji leather is a very peculiar coral. Mine will look great for months, then shrink and slime like it will turn to mush any second. Two weeks latter it looks normal again. You might give it an iodine dip and wait. R

ok.when i first put it in it was in moderate flow.and high in my tank.under pc lights only but i had it 6-7 inches under the lights.i didnt handle it enough to bust it loose.the flow couldnt have tore it.i read and read and read so i did know that they are not easy but there sweet so im trying it.my parameters are sweet a little high on the nitrates but not bad 8-10 ppm.when i stared i could swear it was splittling on its own but never read about that any where.its like the stalk was turning into 2 stalks.i will not touch this thing unless it starts to brown or rot and see if it splits to get pics i have to kinda lift it up so ill hold off for now.thanks guys

My yellow leather did the same thing when I moved it from one spot down low to a higher spot. It was slowly pinching itself off at the base. I let it do it's thing to see what would happen. When it completely detached, I reattached it to another rock and put it back in the first spot. I believe it did this because I moved it too close to another coral. I think they are very sensitive to their surroundings. I have moved it several times since and any time it gets to close (1"-2") to something else it does the same thing. Give it as much space as possible. I also give it alot of light and it is happy now (8" down directly under a 250 MH). Good Luck!

Ricks,

Awesome tank! Just awesome!

I know this is off thread, but I have seen pics of the Great Barrier Reef that just about rival your tank. Well done all the way around.

well ive had it for 4 days and the polyps were out more today more than any so far so im just gonna be patient and see what happens.any other food you guys feed other than light and doses.

well this thing totally ripped itself off the rock it was on,about the size of a golfball.i did see about a dime sized hole in the cap also.its on a very cratered shelf rock so i just kinda put its stalk in a hole and well see what happens.the tear is ragged but not rotten.so ill just wait and see.
