Yellow fin wrasse - I really need some help

OK, this is the second time in the past month that I brought a fish home and it hasn't worked out. This time it was a yellow fin wrasse. I brought home did tank transfer method to remove any chance of ich. In the first tank i added prazipro for that first 3 day cycle. then TT'd as normal. The fish made it through that last Friday and was eating and looking good. yesterday he didn't seem to eat. I changed water after (4) days in a 20 gallon qt. and today day five he looks like he will die.

he is breathing fast and looks off color. but i don't see any other cause and it looks like he will be dead today. this has also happened to my last fish a possum wrasse. I am going crazy as I can't figure out why all the fish I buy are dying.

I checked ammonia with a seachem gauge.

This wrasse went through 12 days of tank transfer? Longest interval in a given tank was less than 72 hours? Then it was placed into a cycled quarantine tank?

Yes, day 1 in 10 gal tank a, day 4 in 10 gal tank b then every 3 days tank swap with cleaning tank with bleach and let dry 2 days. Placed in a qt tank with a hob filter (charcoal) . I use prime in water to reduce ammonia also in the qt tank. Qt tank is bare except for pvc elbow. Thats why the water change at day 4. Fresh water also has prime mixed in.

Looks like either velvet or brook but I'm leaning towards brook. Is there mucus coming off of him? Do you have formalin or Quick Cure on hand for brook?

My last success was with a pair of chromis a few months ago. Since then I've lost like 5 fish and I can't figure where I'm messing up

Yes, when I loose one I clean with bleach and let dry before the next attempt.

This is just me, but I would never clean a tank with bleach.....ever. Even if it sits and dries, just wouldn't do it. Just my opinion. Maybe get a fresh 10 gallon tank and try with another fish to see?

I clean the 10 gL tt tanks with bleach between transfers with no apparent ill effects. If no bleach what would you clean to ensure no transfer of disease?

I clean my quarantine tanks with bleach with no ill effects. When bleach dries, it leaves behind only salt (NaCl). If you're really paranoid about bleach residue, you can dose Prime prior to introducing livestock to the tank.

the bleach cleaning is not a necessity, it is just extra comfort, doubling up on methods to kill cysts. the research that was released on Ich's tolerance (including the Tomite/cyst stage) to different elements included air drying for 24 hours. that said, if leave a tank sitting out (after rinsing and doing a reasonable paper towel job on it) for a couple days between, that alone is enough.

fwiw, i have never used cleaning solution when doing TTM, i just rinse and dry. no faults yet [knock on wood].

Remember that TT only takes care of Cryptocaryon. It has no effect on Amyloodinium (velvet) or Brooklynella. If these fish came from the same LFS, it's possible they contracted one of these two diseases there - especially if the LFS is running low levels of copper in the tanks. This has been shown to mask symptoms of velvet for some reason (no one is sure why). Not saying this is definitely the case, but it's food for thought. Might want to try a different source for your fish to see if they fare better.

^ yes!! Couldn't agree more! I had a tang in a QT for 3 weeks and was just fine and then velvet! I found out the LFS runs low levels of copper.
I would try to buy elsewhere.
