Thinking about getting one of these guys but was curious if anyone knew rather they actual ate the detritus out of the sand or just dispersed it. I seen where it eats the fauna, and should be fed several times a day.?.

Anyone know rather these guys are detritus eaters or not? will they take care of the poo on the sand?

I have a pair and they are heavy eaters at mealtime and eat flakes, pellets, mysis, etc. They pick the rocks and sift the sand, but not really detritus eaters, although they will pick food off the sand that did not get eaten. They keep things stirred up so be prepared to have sand deposited on everything from the sandbed up to 2-3" on the rock.

My best sand cleaner is my fighting conch. Great cleaner, just like a vacuum cleaner.

I know these gobies make a mess, but they are about the coolest fish in the tank. I bought them out of a large group and got lucky with a pair. They swim in formation all day and rarely are more than a inch apart. One will dip and sift, and then the other will follow. I blow sand off my lower rocks about once a month. I have a duncan, frogspawn, and hammer down on the sand and the gobies depositing sand do not seem to bother them and it drops right through. Had some zoas down low and it did bother them.

I may change my mind someday, but for now they are staying.
