yellow leather questions

hello and thank you for your replys!

What do yellow leathers need?

Light? Water movement?

I just purchased one three days ago and it has not really opened.
I have it at the bottom of my 120 under 250 Hqi 20 K bulbs.

The water movement is good in that area.

thanks

#1 -- Time for adjustment; Even moving it from one place to another in the same tank can upset a leather.
#2 -- Moderate lighting.
#3 -- Enough water movement to keep detritus from settling on it and to allow for easy shedding when it chooses to shed.

I've read several places that yellow leathers are particularly sensitive and don't like being touched. A couple of the places suggested the oils in our skin irritate yellow leathers more so than other varieties of leathers. To be honest, I've yet to see a healthy looking yellow leather in any of the LFS around where I live. If I had, we'd have one for sure, as my wife loves the way they look.

I've never had luck with yellow leathers. They are so pretty and I'll keep trying to find a bright yellow HEALTHY leather. I've great lighting, good movement in the tank and no matter where I place it... bottom, middle or top... the end result is the same. DEAD!

I have two large and healthy yellow leathers. I have had then for about a year now. I keep them fairly high in the tank under 150W 10K HQI MH as I have read that yellow leathers (sarcophyton elegans) need more light than most leathers.

I dose Seachem Reef Iodide 3 times a week based on some research I have done that these corals will deplete iodide levels without supplementation.

I have quite a bit of random flow in my tank with an Iwaki 55 RLT and Eheim 1062 running the returns (the Iwaki goes through the chiller before heading to the right return, the Eheim heads straight up the left return) and a Tunze 6100 with a single controller. This gives me about 4500 gph of flow in a 144.

I am able to frag these corals fairly regularly by just attaching a piece of rubble with a rubberband to an offshoot lobe. They do not seem to overly sensative to touching, but I try to wash my hands first, but I definitely agree with fsn77 that they do not like being moved around in the tank.
