So, I have a Cryptocentrus cinctus (I had to look that up, no idea how you people remember these names!) and a small pep shrimp that are never apart. Do prawn gobies for relationships with other types of shrimp rather than just pistols?
I've never heard of that because the pep shrimp can't serve the goby's purpose (digging burrows). So they can't form a true symbiotic relationship. That doesn't mean that they don't derive some comfort from each other's presence. I have a Red Lined wrasse that loves to hang out with my clownfish pair and has even taken to copying their squirming movements. My McCosker's Wrasse swims with my Firefish most of the day. Perhaps they feel if there are other peaceful fish around it must be safe to be out and about.
The Pep shrimp is a cleaner, so it's also possible that the Goby has something going on and just wants the shrimp to "clean" him.
If you get a pistol shrimp, I'd suggest a Randall's shrimp. They are peaceful and stay small, so it shouldn't bother the pep. Both the pistol and goby really benefit from each other.
I already have tons of pistols lol, most are only 1/2 - 1 inch right now. All hitched on my rocks. I'm hopeing the goby hooks up with at least one of them.
