Ok so my yellow tang has been acting strange for the past couple months... and all together just doesnt look healthy. Im confused as to what he has... His appetite is good, but has heavy breathing and seems to be twitching around the tank, flighting quickly. Also he seems to stay in the corners/near the bottom of the tank. I think he has a slight case of HLLE, but maybe there is an internal infection? I dont really know... his face looks thin and has pitts like HLLE, but he also has stringy faeces. Water parameters are good, but havent always been (learing curve) ... But I just need to diagnose and treat now. Any help would be great. THanks.

There may be a few questions to answer first;

Do you have any other fish in the tank?

Are they acting similerly?

Gasping for air?

How is the temp in your tank, if it is getting to warm there may be less oxygen in the water (2x175watt halides may be warming the water a bit)?
Do you give any vitamins with their food (selcon)?

Selcon would/should reverse the HLLE.

Another thing to look at, is the fish twitching, or flashing? If flashing, it may be showing the first signs of a parasite infestation.

Not sure what else to ask, or suggest, but hope this may help a little.

well I know that he has a mild case of HLLE, Im feeding selcon and garlic, but i havent been consistent with it... So Im going to try harder with that. But Yes I have other fish... Hes the only one that is twitching around and flighting... Hes breathing heavy, not gasping for air at the top. his gills looks like they've shrunk a little though, if that makes any sense... Temp is good though, 77 degrees. Should I try a freshwater dip?

A freshwater dip may help, but then again may not. I'd give it a try at least.

Just another thought, do you think maybe it's seeing its reflection on the glass and getting territorial with it's self? I ask because a friend of mine has a powder brown tang that goes nutz when the lights go on, and it sees itself in the glass. This is during the day with bright lighting in the room, lights go off, and he's as calm as can be.

Look for flukes in you dip water after you dip your Tang.
