Yellow tang in a 20 gallon!!!!!

LOL, I just posted in another thread wondering if people intentionally started threads to get people going, I guess here is my answer.:rolleyes:
 
WELL I MEAN COME ON - would you even think about putting a YT in a 20 gallon, nevermind 2 maroon clowns mixed with an ocellaris. I hear stories of people on other forum sites saying why has my tang died, why has it got some sort of disease. the fact is lots of people under-estimate/don't care about the requirements of fish. Even if the fish will be moved into another tank in a month or so. This thread was not started to get people going, i just want to hear what people think, do they think yeah so what, or if it is cruel.
 
I believe the poster said that they are planning to upgrade to a 180 very shortly. And as long as the clowns don't fight, there is nothing wrong with that either IMO.
 
what they do with what they buy is their business not yours. You are not paying for their fish and neither are you 1) raising it or 2) dealing with any part of him owning his fish besides criticizing. Mind your own business. ridiculous. Think once again its not your tank its his, he does what he wants for he pays for what he wants and you are not involved in any of his purchases.... Though it may seem that a YT in a 29 gallon will not let the poor thing grow criticizing will not make it any better it just makes more BEEF which i want to eat. thanks

I thought this was an expert forum for asking Anthony stuff. Someone should move this thread somewhere else.
 
Aaron, 1. if that fish stays in a 20 gallon it will die due to stress, it has nothing to do with room to grow, it deals with room to swim and space needed for the fish to feel comfortable. The fish will slowly waste away. 2. A yellow tang is still a wild caught fish, not aquacultured, the more we take from the wild, the more strain we put on the environment. This is harms the hobby, in image and in future supply. If the people in the hobby don't know right from wrong maybe they should be informed. As hobbiests it is our responceability to protect the resources necessary to enjoy it, not just for one person but for everyone. It goes beyond having the money to go out and buy it.
 
i also think that this thread should be moved. at the risk of being booed, are these the "tang police" that i have kept hearing about? i can't believe this has gone this far. the thread that is linked above specifically says that the 20 is temporary. furthermore, the move will be into a MUCH larger tank.

...If it happens. Things come up and upgrades almost invariably get pushed back if they ever happen at all. If they are upgrading soon why could they not wait until after they had the appropriate sized tank to get their fish?

I don't really see the logic here. I didn't pay for my neighbor's dogs, but if I see him abusing them it immediately becomes my business. Even though there aren't laws protecting fish from abuse I don't see that the issue is any different, especially if someone posts in a public forum. By doing so they made it everyone elses business.

This is a unfortunate falicy in our culture. You do not obtain the absolute and unlimited right over a life simply because some established government (or common law) with absolutely no moral authority tells you that you "own" it. A fish is not a bottle of ketchup, it's a sentient being. And though we're all taking advantage of this extreme "ownership-based" culture, that doesn't mean we have a right to abuse it or any living thing that comes into our company by way of it.
 
Despite myself being an honorary member of the so-called "tang police" (a moniker BTW which I truly despise for its intent/implication and tone when used)... the start of this thread was inflammatory (no less than five exclamation points in the title) and a waste of time IMO.

If I was in a worse mood I'd cite it as trolling and give the starter a formal warning.

In this case however... we have special circumstances:

The starter is a young person (listed as a high school age student in their profile). Note to all... please do make a habit of looking at other folks' post counts and profiles to glean some clue as t their perspective when possible.

We should give younger folks and new (to the hobby or this message board at least) posters much more leniency for their passion and/or awkwardness in the online community. Most all of us were young and variously naive once. Some folks still are after growing up.

So...

Mysis - I can empathize with your sentiment, but you do need to learn to be more mindful of not wasting folks time with such threads. You will enjoy your experience as an RC member too if you avoid starting such threads that invite folks to take shots at you. And if instead you make a habit of it, well... then we won't have to worry about you for very long. Take the knock/warning here in good stride and try to listen/read more than kneejerk/bark.

All: lets not revisit, regurgitate, or iritate each other with such threads of discussions. At least not with the use of dramatioc syntax (exclamation marks) or labels (tang police, haters, etc).

Instead, let's leave the waxing of philosophy for the lounge and at conferences please.

I think that one of the points that was trying to be made earlier is that all of the complaining will not solve anything, you can make a suggestion in the original post to the owner of the fish to try and stop what you think may be cruelty to the fish. However starting a whole new and seperate thread to complain about a subject as sensitive and opinionated as this one is just a complete waste of time and energy. I have only been a member of this site for a few months but I have already read my fare share of "TANG CRUELTY" threads and it would seem to me that eventually everyone would mature and either a) Be responsible with your fish purchases, or b) Give some polite advice to someone who isnt responsible and then leave it at that.

Sorry for the long winded response but this stuff really get on my last nerve.
 
Many understand the hobby as going out to buy a fish and many as well as ourselves believe the hobby is a way to help relieve the reefs as well as enjoy our hobby. You saying all this flame is not going to help. TANG POLICE? WTH? just back off he's got the idea. HAVING JUST PURCHASED THE FISH OR WHATEVER whether its its perm home or not, THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT? is there. You are not going to buy him a new tank are you? if so ill buy a tang and put it in a 10 gallon buy me a new tank, tang police. k thanks.
 
The fact that the original posts was in the new to the hobby section to me shows that perhaps the poster was not aware of the limitations he had placed on his fish it is a sad truth that many people are unfortunate enuff to only have bad LFS giving them advice on what fish to buy and what size tank they need

mysis Instead of running around the forums bashing the guy perhaps u should extend and olive branch and offer sound meaningful advice that could assist him in his problem
