yellow tang question

hey guys i talked to scott at EB and he wasnt able to get me a watchman goby but he has some small yellow tangs and i know once it got a bit big i'd have to either trade it in or sell it but scott said they dont grow fast so i was thinking how bout a 2 - 3 inch yellow tang in my 55g?

I bought a small tang for my 72, and he seemed happy. I have since upgraded to 125 and he really seems to enjoy the extra space. I can count on him to cover the entire tank several times an hour. He also likes to swim around caves and tunnels. I think a lot of it depends not only on the tank size, but how much space there is for the fish to swim and hide. I think the total water volume is important for stability of the water parameters.

Seems a little funny to me to purchase the fish with plans of trading it in later. If you are that arbitrary about it, why not purchase something else that you can keep longer so you don't subject the fish to the stress over and over?

oh it wouldnt be traded or sold til maybe a year or more since it seems they dont grow fast and i was told by many to get a tang to help out with my hair algae which i need to upload some pics cause i cleaned all my rocks 2 days ago and looks nice

For what it's worth, My yellow tang will not touch the Hair Algae that is overgrown. I also have a blue hippo tang, an orange fin Tomini tang, and a lawnmower blenny that will not touch it either. The will pick at seemingly clean rocks right next to the algae, but once it is big enough for me to see it, I have not found a fish that will indulge.

The Tang Police will come a knocking!!! In the dark of nite with a Fish Warrant in hand and haul you off to Bikini Bottom for a trial. You then may never be seen again as the punishment may be very harsh. Now lets go Jelly fishing and forget all this nonsense Hahahaha

LMAO. bill, if that were truly the case, I would have been imprisioned for 3 consecutive terms a long long time ago.

Mario, if they are small, they will do just fine. they dont do very good on HA and in my opinion are the junkyard dog of the tangs. they are bullies and will attack any new fish you add. no matter the type. consider a small Kole or Tomini tang. those are much better additions for a tank your size in my opinion.

The tang police would of knock on my door years ago. I have kept a yellow tang in a 55g tank for a very long time. As healthy as it can be until he went to a new home living in a 90g tank. I kept him for many years before giving him up. I give him up cause he hides too much since day one. A nice healthy kole tang or tomini could do the trick of ridding the algae. I have another yellow from kathy that I keep in my 90g that is a great algae eater!!!

ok if ya two say he wont help much with my algae and is more agresive then ill go with the two ya guys have said.....if i am gonna add a flame or lemonpeel, cleaner, bangi cardenal would one of those tangs do fine with them and should i add one of those tangs in before or after the flame? my wife would like a lemonpeel and i want a flame.....im gonna win but anyways which should i add first the the angel or the tang?

If it was me I would add the tang last. I had a powder brown that turned out to be a really big bully to any new additions. Even chased one of my anthias out of the tank.

All angels are different but I though lemon peels are more likely to nip corals, so I would go with the flame too.

Cherub Angels are totally Reef Safe IME I have had this one for several tanks
(Around 2 yrs) and it has never touched any type of live animal in my tank SPS or otherwise. Plus they are Awesome Blue/Yellow and never stop swimming around like they are nuts, Very active.

Cole tang cleaned my entire 75 of hair algea in one week... Not sure of the aquarium size requirement... But it is a tang... And they do like their space... I have moved him to the show... Just wanted him in there to clean up ... However... I will share with you this... I know alot of people can keep larger water fish with the intent to remove the fish as it grows... That's a common practice... What you want to do is be sure you remove the fish long before you suspect the fish has outgrown the aquarium... Once it reaches a certain growth ... If kept in a "too small" aquarium... The growth will stunt... Once that happens... It's a clock toward an early retirement no matter what size tank the fish is moved to after the biological stunt has begun... Food for thought as we build.
