Yellow Tang

I got a yellow tang a week ago, and he has been hiding behind the live rock all week, he will swim out to the open space but if he sees anything move, even just walk by the tank he hides right away. Is this normal and how do I accustom him to my tank better? I have an ogo plant and some sea lettuce for him to pick at and he does.

so it's normal for it to be scared of everything? the problem is also when i feed he hides in the rocks and then tries to comeout and catch stuff after i walk away...

He'll get used to it...give it some time! Do you have any pictures? I'm curious to see your rock...that's a lot of rock for a 46 gallon...would like to see how you have it set up...

IMHO, Tangs are skittish in smaller tanks. I'm dealing with it now, and have with other tanks in the past.
I agree that it'll come around to you, and new faces at the tank will send it running.
It may have not been the best fish choice in a 46g tank.

**EDIT**
You've got 100 pounds of live rock in that tank?
Wow!!!
Either you put one too many zero's on that number, or that tang has absolutely no room to move.

I agree with being patient nothing good ever seems to happen fast in this hobby.

So true. He will come out in time. Just think, if you are suddenly put in a new environment and you didn't know anyone or anything, you would probably be anti-social to and keep to yourself. In time. In time.

heck i have 80lbs of LR in my 46 bow and a yellow tang in there and he his very happy. the tang is small still and i am also upgrading to a 75 gal. next month but it don't seem like alot of rock in the tank. my gallery has pics. but for your question he will come around and be very open. what other fish do you have in the tank? and how big are the fish?

the clown perculas hang out in the front and i have a baby hipo tang that also is just hangin out in the front all the time. The yellow is just a baby also maybe 1.5 inches.... there is a lot of swimming room, i have a lot of caves and he is darting all over all the time

Two tangs in a 46 is probably too much with just them. IMO I would return one or both of the tangs to the lfs. They can give you a store credit and than you can get some fish that are more approriate for that size tank. A 46 gallon aquarium is just too small for tangs. They need at the very least 60 gallons of water and preferably more. You are very limited on what you can responsibly keep in that size tank. The clowns are fine. Maybe you can get one or two smaller fish for your system. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
