Yellow tang

So my brother in law bought a 150 gallon yesterday that came with some fish, one being this yellow tang. It has no top or bottom fine but otherwise seems healthy. Wasnt in the tank with any aggressive fish so does anyone know what this might be from?

Head, fin and lateral line erosion disease, fairly common in tangs. Mostly seen in fish that are not fed a proper diet or malnourished. Some people think low quality aquarium carbon that dusts a lot can also cause it. At this stage it is no longer possible to cure it.

I agree with this as well. Make sure he feeds it a good varied diet and add vitamins to its food. Also make sure to feed it seaweed on a daily basis.
 
He is not healthy. He is emaciated in addition to lost all of his fins from fin rot. Poor fish. He will forever look ugly and deformed. With good care he can be fat and happy but will forever deformed. Legacy of one of his previous owner.
 
Update on this, the fish was taken from a home where it was not being taken care of so we had suspected he was malnourished. He was very shy, hid in the live rock majority of the day, and extremely thin. He is now doing amazing, has put on a lot of weight, and has been being treated with Vitamin C to help possibly regrow his fins. He is happy as can be and no longer shy. I'm happy to see a fast recovery.

I would like to track its progress....any way to provide an update in a few months after having been taken care of really well?
 
I had the same problem with my yellow tang 20 years ago, before the advent of NLS. It's definitely nutritional related problem. Since then, I kept many yellow tangs and fed nothing but NLS. Guess what? I haven't seen one case of HLLE in ALL my fish for the last 18 years. It might sound too good to be true, but it is TRUE.
 
I don't use NLS and none of my fish have problem. Feed them variety of food, keep the water clean, and they will be fine
 
I am glad your fish are healthy. I can only based on my experience. Not only I have problem with my yellow tang. My sailfin tang also had exposed lateral line and holes on head (peeling) on my blue face, navarchus and emperor angel. This was 20 years ago.
 
I feed my tank a mixture of several flakes and frozen mysis and ocean plankton as frozen food. I also have clips of nori both the green and red nori. Regular water changes. No disease of any of the fat fishes in my tank.
 
20 years ago many people just feed brine shrimp. No wonder the fish have all kinds of diseases. That and the wet-dry filter with sky high nitrates. I don't disagree with you that nutrition is a large part but NLS is hardly the invention that solve this problem.
