Ive had a hippo tang, and later added a yellow tang and they got along fine.
But that's not to say you can get a fish with an an attidude who dosent fit the usual scheme of things.
How big is your tank what other fish are in it, what are the size of existing fish and the 1 to be added? In my 400, my blue hippo minds himself and the zebrasomas(1 purple, 2 yellows, 2 desjardinnis, 1 scopas) argue with each other if and when chasing happens(very rarely).
then you are probably fine. However, a full grown Hepatus Tang will make your tank "look small" once it is fully grown. To get some idea, click on BrianD tank video for perspective (he has a 550).
The statement is definitely not true. For the most part tangs of different shape and color will get along just fine. I have had a multitude of combinations of tangs together in tanks over the years and just always tried to follow that rule. If you are going to add tangs similar in shape I would always recommend that you add them at the same time for the best possible outcome. BrianD is correct it is a toss up, but you shouldn't have a problem here, especially with a tank that big.
