Yellow Wrasse Reef Safe?

I bought a yellow wrasse (canary wrasse, yellow corris, rainbow wrasse) from a buddy and will be getting it next week when he tears the tank down to move. He said it was reef safe, but I noticed he didn't have any snails, hermits, or emeralds. Are these fish truely reef safe? Will it eat all of my clean up crew?

Most wrasse are 50/50 IME. I have a radiant and he just picks a bit at my snails but doesn't kill any that I've seen. But many wrasse are aggressive to shrimp. They do say that the yellow coris, not a true coris, is reef safe. But that's just what they say. Yours may be a good one... or not. Good luck. :)

I have one, had it for about 3 years now(my first marine fish in fact), and haven't ever had a problem w/ it eating crabs/snails/shrimp, I haven't even heard of someone having a problem w/ one, my possum wrasse on the other hand like to mess w/ my peppermints, but only the small ones.

I had one for a year until he commited suicide. He would pick at snails, but I have never found an empty snail shell. He NEVER touched corals. He did however deplete 1/2 of my pod population. I am now seeing it increasing again...

Great fish IMO.

so how did it commit suicide? are wrasses jumpers? i dont have a top, so this may be an issue.

I have had a Yellow Coris for about 2 years. Best fish ever! Had a flatworm outbreak shortly before he arrived. Within a couple of weeks...never saw a flatworm again.

He is in a mixed reef and has never bothered a coral. Will occasionally snatch a piece of food that may be laying on a coral...but never bothers the tissue.

I have also have 3 Peppermints, a Porcelain Crab, a Emerald Crab and numerous hermits & snails...and have never seen the Yellow Coris display any aggressive behavior towards them.

Each fish is different...but you can but reasonably confident that the Yellow Coris will be completely reef safe and will not disturb your corals or inverts.

As far as jumping...it is a very real possibility. Wrasses can accelerate very weekly and if startled will head up and out. Do consider having some type of cover (glass, mesh, etc) on your tank to protect the wrasse.

Good luck.

thanks vitaly. i am glad to hear that you were able to keep it with so many inverts. i think it will be fine, but i guess jumping is an issue. i do have a glass top but dont use it. i dont like how it always gets dirty and blocks light, as well as keeping heat in and not allowing for proper oxygen exchange. i will just run the risk and hope for the best.

easy your worry,

I have a pair for almost a year, never having any problem with corals, snails, any types of shrimps (cleaner, banded...), never flip the corals like other wrasse will do, but I saw they kill baby bristle worms, but compare to control the pest you may have in tank, IMO, they are the "must" fish in a coral tank.

you won't regret it.

I've had one for a while now without a problem. Got it to erradicate a zoanthid nudibranch problem and it did a great job. Nice fish, too. Always swimming in the front of the tank.

just picked it up today. looks really nice. it will be in QT with the rest of the fish for 8 weeks due to an ich outbreak. so i guess i will see the reef safeness when they go back into the display.
