Yellowstriped Cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus cyanosoma) Questions

Hey all,

I'm planning to have a school of these little guys for my future 6 ft long tank. I currently have a pair of Ocellaris clowns, 3 Pajama cardinals and a yellowtail damsel. I also plan to add one tang, probably a mimic tang.

How many can I put in the 6ft long tank without compromising water quality? Approximate water volume of the tank would be around 75+gallons plus a 20 gallon sump, GFO, AC and a skimmer. WC would be 10g every 2 weeks.

Do they have special feeding requirements? Any special considerations when keeping them? Any experiences?

I don't know the answer to your questions, but am following along because I've been eying them for my 185. They probably won't school or even visibly shoal in a 6-foot tank, but I still think they would make a nice display. At the stocking levels you've described I would imagine you could have a decent sized group. What's your water volume?

Total water volume would be around almost a hundred gallons. If the budget permits, I'll get a larger sump - say around 50-75 gallons..

I sure hope they would somehow shoal, as my three pajama cardinals do not exhibit even the slightest shoaling behavior. :lol:

I don't know if they can be kept in groups. I had a pair for years... neat fish, better looking than most cardinals IMO.

We saw big groups of them on the GBR, but I don't know if that was a phase of development or how they live as adults. It also doesn't necessarily mean they would peacefully coexist in the confines of an aquarium.

This is also a big concern for me, aside from bioload issues. I used to have a small group of chromis in my old 50 gallon that ended with just one chromis.

If ever they would somehow be aggressive or territorial as adults or won't shoal, then I might not get them at all.

Dragging up an old thread but I have 15 of these in my 150 gallon tank with 2 ocellaris clownfish, a flame angel and a blue throat trigger. These fish are awesome, they're active, school together constantly and have beautiful colouration. No aggression in them at all either.
I really wanted a schooling fish in my reef and have always had trouble with green/blue chromis, the yellow striped cardinal is perfect though, stays small too, unlike the chromis.
