does anyone know where i can get my hands on a pair of tank raised yellow watchmans? or even just one? i'd like to try my hand at spawning them down the road plus i'm a BIG fan of captive bred fish. thanks for your input, i tried posting this question on a different forum, but i'm not getting any responses.

they are fairly easy to obtain, if your lfs doesnt usually carry them, they can always order you a few. yellow watchmans are protogynous hermaphrodites( start as asexual and then change to female and then to male) and you should be abble to get a pair by puting two similar sized juveniles together or even pairing like protandrous hermaphrodites ( like clownfish) by placing a small and a large together.

thanks for the info! i didn't know liveaquaria sold tank bred yellow watchmans! i read the RC magazine article about breeding these fish, it didn't say they were hermaphrodites...just that females were larger and duller in color. again thanks for the info, it definitely makes my life easier!

I've been breeding them, but live in South Africa. Easy to get wild caught ones. I know there were or still are a couple of breeders in the states. I would be interested to know if the commercial guys are producing them?

Good info, but may I ask where you got this from. Its unclear on many gobies where the sexual allocation is. ie some gobies are gonochorism, while a majority are "probably" protogynous w/ bi-directional hermaphorditism, but this is still an unknown
I was unaware that any of these places are selling captive bred/raised (CB/CR) watchman gobies.

I know there are a handful of folks stateside (and prolly overseas as well), that are breeding them. But to my knowledge none of the commercial aquaculture firms (ORA, pro-aquatix, C-quest) have watchman gobies on their lists.

I think many of the neon gobies and a few of the smaller 7 spine gobies (green-banded, red-headed) are CB/CR fish, but i'm not sure that watchman gobies are

Nick McClurg- since you have experience breeding ywg. how do YOU pair them up? I was planning on buying 2, then pairing them up in my biocube29. after they've grown i am planning on moving them to a 20 long and hopefully try my luck at spawning.
i'd appreciate the advice.

I only have one spawning pair. I am trying to pair some of the juveniles off now. I'm guessing two imature specimens will produce a pair. Sexually mature specimens may not. With my breeding pair the larger specimen is the female, so maybe following the pairing techniques of clownfish may work.

just thought i'd update.
i went to my lfs a few weeks ago and found 2 ywg's. one was larger and duller and the other was smaller and more yellow and this was the result. both still looked immature

so for everyone out there who would like to pair some ywg's......

I currently have 1 YWG established. If later on down the road I decided to try my hand at breeding them, would the first one in the tank take the second one? Would the second one find and stay with the first one in its cave?
