... nice pair ey?

About a year ago I was having a pyramid snail problem, so after scrubbing and scrubbing my clams, I gave up and sold my clams. My thinking was that the snails would not be able to survive too long without the clams. Well it has been a year+ without clams, and I still have multitudes of pyramis snails. I have a six-line wrasse, but he does nothing. How much longer can they survive, and what are they eating to stay alive now?

The pyramids in my tank are definitely using the astrea snails as hosts. If you read through my posts above, you'll see I get most of the pyramid snails off of my astreas. If I clean four or five astreas I can collect as many as 40 pyramids some days.

... start cleaning your snails and see if you don't find some pyramids.

I did not know the pyramid snail could feed off a turbo snail. I thought they were more or less obligate clam feeders. I have Knop's Giant Clam book, and he says a powerful skimmer in conjuction with ultraviolet light removes the pyramid snails planktonic larve. The life cycle of a prymid snail is about 4 to 5 months. So it may take scrubbing clams with skimmer and ultraviolet light for about 5 months to completely eradicate these parasites.
