Yet another skimmer question

I have a Coralife 125 super skimmer. The skimmer is used but the needle wheel pump is new. Skimmer works great but the pump is loud. is this normal. Is it because of the needle wheel? Anyone have some advise on how to quite it down some? Thanks all

some pumps are louder than others. Which pump is it? make sure it isn't vibrating against something in your sump.

Do you have the entire unit mounted internally in the sump, or is it hanging externally, with the pump in the sump???

Perhaps the skimmer body is vibrating against something if it is not clamped securely to the sump; if setup externally. Have you tried moving the unit around a bit?

Sounds like this would be a simple fix.

Best of Luck,
Don :)

It is the OEM pump. I got it from Big Al's. The pump is what is making the noise, I have it at about 2" of water depth, any lower and it doesn't produce the micro bubbles. If I put it at the recommended 3-4" it is nice and quiet but no bubbles.

I'm not very familiar with the CSS , but I just recently bought a used turbo floater and I took it apart to clean. When I put it back together I accidentally swapped the intake and feed lines on the pump and had the same problem with noise and no bubbles. I don't know if that helps.

I can tell you are a mechanic because we are the only people who use the term OEM. :D

Opps, ok you caught me.

I took the pump apart and the only thing I found was the needle wheel was a little loose on the magnet. I called Big Al's and they are sending out a new impeller. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

I personally used this skimmer and thought it was a piece of garbage on my 55g, hopefully you'll have other results.

Good Luck.

Yup it was simple. After I installed the new impeller it still made a lot of noise. I had the pump about a 2" depth, I tinkered with it a bit and found another 1/2" deeper and the pump is completely silent. Thanks everyone for your advise.
