you guys with the sweet webpages...

OK, I have the files figured out. This is how the site works:

The parameters and status are read from a MySQL Database hosted in "InternetLand" with the CoralFreak website. The server that houses the website runs a "job" every fifteen minutes that sends a message to Allens home computer that is hooked to his aquacontroller and gets the current parameters of his tank. It then writes them to the MySql database (in InternetLand) for further retrieval. And then, of course, the website reads those parameters when someone visits his site. The readings are a maximum of fifteen minutes old unless the connection is down.

Allen pays monthly for this website. My thought here is why pay for a web host when you have to "query" your computer anyway for the settings. This query requires that your home computer be a web server, so why not have the complete site hosted there and save the monthly cost. It might not be as fast at times, but as long as you have DSL or cable I doubt there will be an issue. It's not like we are going to be hosting MSN.

Anyway those are my thoughts for tonight.

Slight correction: The server that houses the website runs a "job" every fifteen minutes that sends a message to Allens Aquacontroller (ACIII) and gets the current parameters of his tank. His Aquacontroller is hooked directly to the internet through his router so it has its own IP address. What this means, is for this configuration you have to have the ACIII because it has its own webserver built in. The ACII does not. Since I currently have an ACII I will be working on getting this to work another way passing through the home computer. Waverez, you mentioned you also have an ACII, so JJ's and Coralfreaks implementation will not work for you either. I will figure it out. I am also considering a method that will allow the website to be hosted on a home computer or on an "internetland" server. I host sites at goDaddy, so I may consider them.

A while back we had a discussion about ways for GIRS to make income so we can have some more neat activities. This website thing may be an option if the directors wanted to consider it. I don't just an idea. It might not pan out that way.

In interested in your workaround also becasue Im running an ACJR that doesnt have a built in web sever either. Cant wait to see what you come up with.

What is xampp? I would imagine there is a way, but not the way it is configured at Allen's. It would have to go through another machine. I assume that is what he did for ACII.

I wish I could help out but I don't know sqat about it other than update stuff on the site. All I know is that I set up a schedule even to happen every min. so my stats update using VBUpload program.

Yeah Joel. Huxley Communications offers Fiber to Home service.
The ammount of bandwidth I have available to me and simply do not use is staggering.

Cool Ryan! They run fiber to your house? or just to your neighborhood DSLAM? Do you have a windows box with IIS available? Does your power go out much like ours?

One advantage to going with GoDaddy is they have some pretty nice photo uploading software loaded on their servers that would give us some nice uploading from the browser capabilities. For another 3 dollars a month I can host unlimited websites. Their reliability has been excellent.

when first setting up my site I went with go daddy. The bad they is they don't offer databases... which I believe is where the logs get stored.

They have database support now JJ. They offer MySql and Access. I think they off MS Sql as well. I will just use an access database in my redesign. That makes it very simple.

Man i would kill for some fiber going to my house....that would be the bees knees.

By the way, what features do you guys like the best about the site? The current status of params and equipment of course. What else? I plan on adding a phot album that you can easily upload pics from your browser.

I wouldn't mind picking up an AC....I would love to be able to check on my tank while at work...especially after doing a water change or adding something new so I can keep an eye on params...

Well I haven't gotten very far, I have not been able to spend much time. Here is the very little that I have started. Parameters are not live yet, but it does have a working Photo Album with upload capabilities.

Let me know if I am way off base with this. I know there is a bunch yet to be done.
