Your opinions on pistol shrimp..

Last night I found a pistol shrimp in my tank.. It's a 2 inch, give or take, red and white striped pistol shrimp. I had been hearing the "pop" noises for a while. I now know what is happening to all of my snails. Of course, I managed to get a welk with some scarlet hermits I bought a few months ago. I thought it was cool until I found it munching on a snail one night.

Anyway, this little pistol has come out in a big way. He is tunneling and piling up sand all over the place. It is almost like I had just bought him, except I haven't bought anything other than a few aquacultured acros from bioreef. Oh well, he has a home now.

I have a Pistol Shrimp/Goby pair in 1 of my aquariums.
The Pistol Shrimp has never hurt/killed anything.
When I first put him in the new aquarium he really made
a mess of everything, but since then has calmed down. I like
watching him make a tunnel just to cover it up & start
over again. SAM

My advise is to get him out. I saw one that was in my tank kill snails. They also eat holes right through rock, tunnel, knock small frags over. I just dont like them.

I enjoy watching mine. You never know where he's going to pop out next. He's small and doesn't cause any problems, so we'll see what happens. I guess you could take the claws off if you don't like the popping.

I suspect he came on some aquacultured florida rock I bought almost a year ago. As long as he stays on the floor of the tank, I will keep him. If he eats my obsoleta snails, thats ok. Now it he eats my astrea snails, then we may have a problem.
