got 55g tank im going to set up in about a couple weeks. i have decided on a snowflake eel. i dont want too many fish in there. i like the blue tang. and i liek puffers and triggers. im new to this so your advice is obviously very important to me. if i could have the eel some kind of cool crab and maybe like 4-5 fish that would be awesome! please help me out

also someone told me a lion fish which i think are cool too. so for sure i want a snowflake eel, lion fish, some kind of puffer, and 3 others that you guys recomend off of what i want for sure

Puffers and lions don't mix very well. Puffers are known to nip at the lionfish fins and harass them to death. If you must go with these two, go with one of the dwarf species of puffers. Triggers and lions don't mix very well either, for the same reason.

Lions are not really agressive fish, other than the fact that they eat live stuff. Any fish that can fit in their huge mouth, is a gonner. But otherwise they do not act agressively, like a trigger for example.

If you want true agression, a trigger is the best example. I have a niger trigger that is a big bully in the tank and will harass other fish just for the fun of it. Like he'll guard the algae clips even though he doesn't eat them, but will not let other fish get close to them. Or sometimes he gets in moods where he'll go after any fish that swims in front of him. If you find a small sized humu trigger, you can add that to a 55gal since they are very slow growers.

Here's an older picture of the big bully, back when he was in my 65gal reef. I had to take that maroon clown you see in the picture out of that tank because the Niger pretty much shredded her to pieces one day. But now she's fine in my other tank.

awesome dude ok im not going to get that lion fish then. i just think there cool how they just float there all clamly with there huge fins. but alright so would a trigger and puffer do alright?

so i got sf eel, puffer, trigger or 2?, any others? also do you know of any crabs? though i heard of a box crab or somthing??

Triggers and puffers do ok together, tangs get along with triggers too. Although tangs usually need more space than a 55gal. Almost any crab you get will get eaten by the triggers and puffer. I have a whole graveyard of hermit crab shells in front of my trigger's cave. I have had better luck with larger hermit crabs like the strawberry hermits and also with the emerald crabs. I think if you get a larger emerald crab, it'll be ok. But there's always a chance it'll get eaten.

ok so fish so far. and where can i get them crabs?

sf eel, a puffer, a trigger

are there any other colorful and livly fish i could add? or can i have like 2 triggers?

I wouldn't recommend 2 triggers in a 55 gal. As for the emerald crabs, they're pretty popular. Any fish store will have them.

With a 55 you'll need to stick to some of the smaller triggers like Bursa's and Picasso's. Got to watch on the puffers to, other than the small toby's many will out grow a 55 in short order. As for crabs, the snowflake and all the triggers and puffers will consider them a delicacy ;)

well i want a bigger crab lol so he wont be eaten. and sounds good for fish. what are some smaller ones i could throw in just for cool looks that wont be harmed

The bigger crabs still get picked on till they are reduced to a meal. The ones big enough to be safe just might eat the fish ;)

o lol dang. well i think i still may try one out but what about some other fish i want something livly and colorful

A flame angel would be good or a coral beauty angel. And I think a Foxface would be ok in a 55gal as long as it's not overstocked. Just be careful of the spikes on its back, when you put your hand in the tank. I've had one for a long time and it gets along with all my fish, including the triggers. One of my favorite fish.

ok. cool so heres my stock list.

snowflake eel, emarlod crab, trigger, puffer, and two angels

is that too many? or is that good? if i can have a couple more please let me know some more ideas!

btw, you don't want to add all these fish in at the same time. It'll crash your tank. 1 or 2 at a time, then wait 3-4 weeks before adding another. And angels don't get along with each other, especially in a smaller tank like a 55gal. If you must have 2 angels, add them in at the same time.

No way  Just kidding, a big trigger will kill a crab, but not all triggers go nuts on them when the trigger is smaller.

Here are some hermit vs. trigger pics for you!
