Slow way way way down, set up the tank, get some nice live rock in there, (as much as you can afford) and let it sit with nothing in it for a month. In that months time you can do all sorts of research on these fish and what would be the best for your 55G.

Personally, in a 55, depending on your filtration system, I'd only want one of the mentioned fish in there. Have you seen even the smaller triggers full grown? 9"-10" easy, so try to picture that swimming around in your tank, and how much room would be left for others. (not much) Good luck, and just take it slow, the fish aren't going anywhere.

And fwiw, I'm not trying to discourage you here. Have fun with it, one of my favorite parts of the hobby is learning.

i do love learning too. everyone had to at some point. but for fish i guess i want the snowflake eel for sure. i want something that will like the coral and i want some others that just look cool. if you guys can give me a list and let me do some research on which ones i want that would be great!

ok heres what i found and heres what i would like to get let me know what you guys think humo trigger, yellow eye and blue eye trigger, dog face puffer, snowflake eel. and some kind of fish that will like coral idk much about that yet is there somehwere i could read up on that?

I would skip the dogface. Puffers are big, and messy.
A 55 will not suport a dogface for more than a year, and that is if you buy a small one. They are also known coral nipers. So if corals are down the road. You may end up with problems.

I would look into dwarf lions, small puffers, dwarf angels, hawk fish, gobies

saddled valentini puffer
humu trigger
fuzzy dwarf lionfish
mimic eibli tang
pair of med/large maroon gold clownfish (my hs colors well when i was in high school)


also if your thinking the humu and tang would get too big for both would just the tang be ok?

No, no. It's your tank. Do what you want. I was just throwing some ideas out.
By the time the tank cycles the list will change 10 more times.

The puffer and trigger will quite likely nip the fins on the lionfish, they also like to nibble on coral

Right!

If you're dead set on the Snowflake Eel, the Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish and 2 GSM Clowns will do great. That would be about it for a 55, and none of those will harm corals when you add some. Other than the eel, none of those will harm crabs either.

As mentioned, you're not going to be able to keep a puffer with any corals. Even the small puffers can destroy corals.

I applaud your efforts in doing your homework beforehand.

SFE, Dwarf Lion and a pair of clowns sounds like an awesome list for a 55G! It may not sound like much fish, but let me give you an idea.

I have a 110G FOWLR (twice the size of your 55) set up at work, it has 6 blue/greeen chromis, a maroon clown, two schooling bannerfish and a raccoon butterfly, and I consider it fully stocked, especially once they mature.

Personally I think that the snowflake will grow and maybe eat the maroons in the far future, but thats a long way away. Also down the road, he'll probably outgrow 55g and try jumping. But this is months if not years down the road.

This is going to be a very fun tank to watch. The dwarf lion probably won't move much and if you have alot of pink flowery corals (i.e. xenia) he may change textures and colors somewhat to blend it. My LFS has a 55g reef tank with 3 lions and all 3 have done this.

Just curious, why do you say the Fuzzy Dwarf won't move around much?

Also, the Snowflake Eel will try to jump out even before it grows up. They're known to be very good at finding escape holes, that's why you should have a cover on the tank.

IME they usually just hang around most of the day. The one I had sat with his head facing down all day. I traded him in.

Their just normally sessile animals. Not to say their boring per se, just that their not as extravagant and graceful as other species. Personally I love them and think they are a blast to watch.

Im beggining to think that the snowflake may be a bad idea, I think in a tank that small he may eventually snap and eat the maroons. Also, like I said previously though he may be fine for a while, an animal that tries nonstop to escape a tank because its too confining is usually a good indicator that the tank is too small?
