YWG fry

My Watchman Goby pair has been laying eggs for some time now, but I'm not really set up to attempt to raise them yet so I really havent done anything with them yet, but last night in the tank with the gobies I turned off the PH while feeding my suncoral, and witnessed hundreds of little fishies swimming around. This the first time I've actually seen the fry. So I siphoned out 15 or 20 of them ( these suckers are fast ), and put them into my LR QT tank which is loaded with copepods and many other little creatures, I've also been dosing alittle bit of phyto to this tank lately. This morning I can see some of the fry survived the night. They probably wont make it, but they are very cool to watch. Here's a pic.

How can you tell the difference between a male and female YWG?

Not exactly sure, I got mine as juveniles, they came from the same tank, and seemed to enjoy eachothers company there. I brought them home and while in QT one began to change color becoming gray. I think this typical atleast some of the time, but not always. The gray one is the female.

Hi David, I have a pair of them that have spawned twice so far and are about due for a third try. Did you happen to notice what day they hatched? I'm told they hatch the 5th night after lights out. Were your lights out when you turned off the PH? Guess you didn't have to feed the sun coral that night :D

FWIW both of mine are grey, I got them from Nicole C and a search will locate a thread she had going on them, she raised one baby I think.

I have followed much of Nicoles threads with interest. Did you get her breeding pair, or did she have more than one? I thought her pair was gray/yellow?

I have heard of yellow male/female pairs, yellow/gray pairs like mine, and now gray/gray pairs, so I guess you never know whats what with these guys.

Unfortunately mine have now chosen to lay their eggs where I cant see them so this time I didnt even know there were any. In the past though it seems like it was longer than 5 nights for the eggs to hatch. I could be wrong though I never counted, and they were laying close to two egg batches per month.

Were your lights out when you turned off the PH?

Yes and no, the main lighting over the tank was out but I have an additional light on the opposite end of the tank from the suncoral so that I can see when I feed it. Nicole mentioned in the past that th fry were photosensative, and this does seem to be the case. For the most part however they remained down on the bottom.

I dont think any of the fry survived unless they are hiding amongst the piles of LR rubble in the QT tank I moved them to.

She only had the one pair, life got too busy so she let me have them to work with. I do believe they were grey/ yellow at first but as they matured both became grey. They are huge, I never realized how large this species gets until I saw these.

Twice a month??? Nicole said they averaged 4 weeks between spawns, for me they have only spawned twice, six weeks apart. In both cases the nest was lost around day 3 or 4. They should be about ready soon and I will pull the nest for hatching in a kriesel.

Mine were laying eggs about every 3 weeks, It seemed like the eggs hung around for more like a week. I guess they're like people in that respect mine are newlyweds, and Nicole's/yours are a more mature couple. :D

Yea, my male is always hanging around with his buddies watching sports and smoking cigars instead of taking care of business :(
