Zach's 120 Gallon Reef Resurgence

Thanks, question for you. What did you pay for your marineland tank and have you had any issuex with it?

I haven't had a single issue with it. The glass drilled great and it's been holding water! I got it during the Marineland sales they do through one of my LFS. I don't recall exactly what I paid for it, but it wasn't too bad.

Picked up two new frags today from Atlanta Aquarium. Had my eyes on a few more but I really need to hold off and see how these hold color. I think I've gotten a few of the pale/brown ones looking better, let's see how these ones hold up.

For nuisance pest control I clipped the acro off the frag plug and did a CoralRx dip for 5 minutes, rinsed for 5 minutes, Bayer dip for 15 minutes and then finally two more consecutive 5 minute rinses.

I went ahead and glued the acropora in place, high on the rock work, as I think I've done more harm than good by trying to acclimate these higher light demand corals to my lighting. These coral are coming from a highly lit system and I think I'm better off going ahead and getting the sps corals up higher on the rockwork from the get go.

Fingers crossed we keep color!

I pulled this out of my refugium the other day... bubbly, spongy mass. Any ideas on what it is? It was just floating at the water line. ewwwwwww

Weird!

Kind of looks like some kind of bacterial biofilm/mass. You might try slicing it open. Could be something dead and decomposing inside.

Or maybe it's a byproduct of some additive. Maybe it's your algae phase, all rolled up in a neat package!

I think you might be onto something. It's not far fetched to think that it some sort of bacterial buildup due to the Vibrant dosing. Lots of factors in play but I do believe that it could be a byproduct of the nutrient import/export caused by the bacterial additions to the tank.

It's going good. I added a little 8" blue led night light today. I still need to figure out how to get it on a timer. The fish and coral are looking good.

This weekend I put some finishing touches on a few things that had been put on the back burner. The reinforcement board for the lights needed painting to match the surrounding ceiling area. Looks much better than the raw wood and really blends in now. I need to put some caulking around where the wood meets the ceiling, the popcorn finish made for some unsightly gaps.

Finished up painting the exterior of the stand and got it permanently attached to the structural portions. The sides are attached with velcro for ease of access. Fashioned up a little L shaped cover for all the wiring traveling from the tank to the equipment cabinet. The temperature cord is a little short and won't make the turns required to hide it. I need to find an extension for it. Anyone have any ideas? Sounds like a trip to Fry's or MicroCenter is needed. I believe it's a molex connector. Seems pretty standard.

So dark and mysterious...

Looks good. I still need to figure out what to do about a QT tank.

So far I haven't been QT'ing, but I know that you can only do that for so long before you get bit.

Thanks. The QT tank was a bit of a contention point but Mae understands the importance of it and appreciates the reasons behind it so it's been permitted. We don't want that area to be a permanent QT tank though, just going to leave it set up until we get the majority of the fish stocked in the tank. At that point I'll add fish on a more irregular basis so I'll set up a QT when need be. The ultimate goal is to plumb in another DT to the existing set up for a clown harem and anemone tank.

Man, that looks nice! I like that look where the lighting is suspended with nearly invisible cables.

How's the tank doing? What direction are you going with it? Any new fish on the wish list?

Yeah. I have a place where I could put a 10-20 gallon tank for the QT. I just haven't decided how to approach the wife about it. Part of me is thinking about just setting it up one day while she's not there and go 'surprise' when she gets home...

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I'm very happy with how the lighting turned out. It looks clean and unassuming which were my two main goals with it.

The tank is seemingly doing well. I'm not super happy with coral coloration and fluorescence though. I know what the tank needs (I think) and I'm keeping my parameters dead on with what I'm shooting for but I'm still struggling with it. I may make a separate post detailing the tank, the params, what I'm struggling with and see if I can't get any sort of help out of some folks.

My infinitely wise Dad always says it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission!

At some point, on some forum, I saw someone using a nice little storage container to hold all of their testing equipment and reagents and thought it was a great idea. Well, I was shopping at Lowe's the other day and came across this nice little deal and thought I'd share how I'm using it.

Stack-On Deep Cup Organizer from Lowe's.

It's a great container, all the bins come out for ease of use, it keeps my reagents nice and dry and keeps everything clean and in one spot.

Top Row, Left to Right:
  • Nitrate/Phosphate color wheel, refractometer calibration fluids, salinity pipettes
  • Red Sea Nitrate
  • Red Sea Phosphate
  • Salifert Calcium

Middle Row, Left to Right:

Bottom Row, Left to Right:
  • Red Sea Coral Colors Test (Iodine)
  • Red Sea Coral Colors Test (Potassium and Iron)

This little container has been immensely helpful in keeping things stored nice and neat. I hope it helps you out if you get to try it too!

Very slick and smart! It looks like it might be water proof as well, which from my experience, is very helpful.

Zach, you do so many things right. Maybe you could share a little more about what you are doing and why. What are those parameters? How do you hit them? Why are those parameters important? What are you trying to accomplish and how do you plan to get there?

I've read tons, but some stuff just doesn't seem to get through to me. Hearing real world methods from guys in the trenches seems to work better. Anything you'd care to share would be helpful to a lot of us!
