ZeeSparrow's 75G LPS tank build

Did a 20 gallon water change this morning. Tests tonight:

5/16/2015
NO3: ~20
PO43-: 0
SG: 1.026
Mg: 1410
Ca: 500+ (used all the reagent and still didn't change color)
dKH: 7.7 (decreased...?)
Temp: 80.1F

Spent the afternoon at my parents so didn't make it to Aquatic Dreams yet. Tomorrow I WILL go! The longer I wait to go, the bigger my shopping list gets. I need to get in soon though because I'm about out of salt. I want to try IO Reef Crystals instead of the Kent I've been using.

I don't think they have reef crystals, I know I saw jugs of Kent and they mentioned it as a preference. I could be wrong though.

I bought a bag of instant ocean from petco then headed over to Aquatic Dreams. I picked up some chaeto and coral food they recommended ... Can't remember the name of it now. Came home and set up my clamp light and chaeto, fed the corals and cleaned up the wiring. Lots better.

Also cleaned up the room some because I still had boxes of stuff everywhere! Lol

I did not get snails or fish as my nitrates are still high, so going to do another water change later this week and see if the chaeto will bring them down.

Looking good Zee! What did they charge for the cheato?

Ahhhh... I don't know. Between $5-10? Also bought a bottle of oyster feast. Total was $31 and change.

BTW there was a bit of bubble algae with it. Pulled out what I saw yesterday but I think there's some smaller ones in there yet. Hope it doesn't make it to the DT.

That's a good looking setup Zee...
Love the aquascape.

Thank you! I didn't realize that picture shows my neighbor's truck grill. :spin2:

If all goes as planned, this week should be relatively uneventful. I'll do another ~20 gallon water change in the next day or two and broadcast coral feeding each night. Otherwise, time to sit back and enjoy!

Very cool. Sitting back and enjoying? That's what I've been doing. I have amazing specks of dust floating about my tank. They are awesome! Tolerant of high ammonia too and very low maintenance. ;)

Actually I've been having some issues dialing in my overflow to right where I like it, so since I have nothing in my tank yet, I'm stripping out the ball valve on my main drain and installing a gate valve tonight so I can stop chasing water levels. Should have done it sooner, but the place I work at finally is carrying some decent gate valves in the size I need.

I'll just have to enjoy a reef tank through your thread for a while longer. :D

Can the cheato be rinsed in fresh water without harming it or do you use SW? I've been considering an ATS for my new build and wonder if it will remedy all types of algae.. Is the bubble algae caused by excess nutrients too?

I think washing it in freshwater would be fine. It would die in freshwater, but you're only rinsing it.

All plant life uses the nutrients in the water. Macro algae competes with lesser forms for those nutrients, so it should help.

I've read that you can wash it in either freshwater or old tank water, with varying opinions of either method. Although there are just as many who rinse as those who do not. I chose not to because I wanted to keep as much of the life from that old tank water as I can.

I only mentioned FW rinse if it were to be used strictly for nitrate export. Obviously, if you're wanting it for any life on it, you'd have to rinse it in SW.

Did a 20-25 gallon water change tonight with IO. Will test params tomorrow.

Getting diatoms now. All over the rock. Added a turbo snail, some other large snail and a few small ones... All they could find at the LFS.

Also picked up a frag..... Two heads of hammer. It's peeking out a bit so will hopefully open up tomorrow under the lights. Moved the other frags onto the rock.

Pictures tomorrow.

Cool. Looking forward to the pics.

I've been watching the nassarius snails in our 220 reef tank where I work. They'll sink slowly into the sand until they disappear. Around feeding time, you'll see their "periscope" come out of the sand, look around and then they rise up out of it just like a submarine. And they move very fast over the sand bed, which I found quite remarkable for a snail.

That's what the other snail is... Nassarius. He moves Fast! The turbo is typical slow snail pace but the nassarius just trucks along. Fun to watch.

So turbo must be one of those funny nick-names like calling a bald guy curly or a fat guy slim... :jester:

Looking forward to the hammer pics. I had one in my old tank that got pretty big.
I love hammers and frog spawns.
