ZeeSparrow's 75G LPS tank build

HA! We'll see if they survive. That would be really cool.... baby nerites!!

I've read that they are only able to reproduce in brackish water... They lay eggs like crazy but the eggs won't hatch. Whoever wrote it may be wrong though as I'm unable to validate the source.

Sure could be true. All I've read is that they're not likely to hatch. Fun to consider the possibility, in any case.

Tonight I did all my testing BEFORE my water change (as was suggested in a separate post I made on the topic). I scrubbed rocks with a brush, and then a toothbrush, and siphoned out as much of the gunk floating around afterward that I could. After the ~20 gallon w/c, I tossed a new sponge filter I have on hand from an old HOB filter into the sump, just for a little more mechanical filtration as there were a lot of algae strands and diatoms floating around yet. I'll pull it out in the next day or two, depending.

6/3/2015
NO3: <20 (increased coral feeding and a slew of CUC contributed to the rise)
PO43-: 0
SG: 1.027 (1.026 after the w/c... not sure why it was higher beforehand as I have ATO w/RODI)
Mg: 1320
Ca: 490
dKH: 7.5
Temp: 80.1F

Alk and Mg dropped a bit since 5/31. Going to have to keep an eye on those.

Spent a couple hours working on things today. Gave the clowns a 25% WC and siphoned the bottom of their tank. They're both still looking well. I moved the frogspawn and hammer, epoxied both of them down so the snails can't knock them around anymore; brushed some algae off about half of the rocks, then epoxied them to eliminate wobbliness; increased the length of time on my max blues (@35%) from 1.5 hours to 4 hours and re-positioned one of the powerheads to hopefully stop aggravating one of the candycanes. Also finished the screen top.

Tomorrow I'll test again and do another large w/c.

Keep the updates rolling! When do you plan to move the clowns from quarantine?

They finished their TTM period for ich and are hanging out in a 10g for at least two weeks. It's been 3 days. It's really tempting to shorten the timeframe, but I won't. So the 18th is the first possible date they'll go in the DT.

I considered picking up a duncan coral yesterday, so I didn't drive anywhere near the LFS. It's definitely in the plan, though. Before or after the clowns move in? We'll see.... :fun2:

Zee,
What do you "feed" your Candycanes?

I was feeding oyster feast per the recommendation of the owner of Aquatic Dreams, daily/every other day for a week or two. This past week I have cut that down to twice a week broadcast feeding, followed by direct feeding of frozen mysis. Skimmer unplugged for at least half an hour if not overnight (oyster feast kills the head on it anyway) and powerheads turned off during direct feeding.

Fed the corals last night, in fact. The one candy cane I am concerned about extended its polyps a bit towards the end, and appeared to have taken in some food. Good signs! It looks a little better this morning. Will continue to keep an eye on it for now, though I'm considering moving it back down the rockwork (which will be no small feat as I epoxied it to the rock rather well :headwally:).

NO3: ~15
PO43-: 0
SG: 1.026
Mg: 1350
Ca: 480
dKH: 8.6
Temp: 80.2F

VERY happy to see nitrates reducing. I was starting to wonder if my API test was 'stuck' on 20. Will be doing another ~25 gallon w/c today.

Here's a bad phone photo of the candy cane after eating last night:

You can see the polyps of the head behind him, and how plump he looks. I was able to move him down, but not without issue. He's quite retracted now. Hopefully the new location which is lower flow and light will allow him to recover. If so, it will be interesting to compare the two frags in their respective locations. I'm going to leave them alone now (other than feeding). You're all my witness (all three of you). :)

Frogspawn enjoyed the water change (bonus snail in the background):

Ahahaha! Not surprising, Mark. A few weeks is NOTHING in this hobby, except when you're cycling. Grizz, Swope and RingingEars will catch up soon, too, I expect. Fun times ahead!

That frogspawn is gorgeous!

I normally would say I'm jealous, but my parameters are right on and I bit the bullet and added some inhabitants. Everything is doing great, the water params are great and I'm just enjoying my tank now.

Your rock is prettier than mine...mine is still pretty stark white, but expect that to change soon.

The frogspawn is my current favorite. But pretty rocks? Ha! They're covered in brown and green and look anything but pretty right now. It is better than stark white though I'll give you that.

You will all be way ahead of me, time and finances will slow the early side of my build tremendously... But I'll get there!! I also love the frog spawn! Ever considered a simple filter on your camera to get truer color?

I bit the bullet also and bought a CandyCane and two mushrooms. Had to run to Jacksonville. Will post pictures Tuesday night. My wife keeps asking when I'll buy some fish and put them in QT. Probably next weekend!

I'm just using my old iPhone 4s so.... Yeah. Might have to spring for a real camera some day.

Now the candy cane question makes sense! ;) looking forward to your pictures. What fish are you going to add first?

Yes but you can use small bits of colored plastic that will take out the blue providing better images. Even with an iPhone
