Zeo Coral Snow and Pohl's Extra - Experiences in non-Zeo tanks?

Proline sent me free bottles of this a couple years back. I've been hesitant to use it because I don't have a Zeo tank. Lately, I've been wanting to try them out. Are these OK to use in non-zeo tanks?

Any tips for using these? Things to look out for?

Coral Snow is a fairly good product in that it helps you remove some of the tanning that your carbon might not have gotten to yet. Dosage depends on your system size but generally for a non zeo tank i would suggest starting at 1/2 the recommended dosage on the bottle and go from there.

Phol's Xtra on the other hand is a supplement that contains amino acids, and unless you have a ULNS it would contribute to algae issues from my experience. But if you do have an ULNS by other means such as, vodka+mb7, or other methods this supplement is awesome.

I currently use both along with biopellets and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Terry, first off Zeo products have an expiration date and if they're a couple years old they may be expired.

The snow is supposed to bond to nutrients and make them big enough to skim out making your water cleaner and clearer.

Ive used the extra for a while and honestly couldn't tell you if it's actually doing anything. You're only supposed to use it in low nutrient water. Im sure that's because it's an amino acid of some sort that should help your corals in low nutrient conditions but could pollute your water otherwise...

Ian, yes, the bottles I have expire in June of this year. They also sent my a bottle of coral vitalizer? That expired, so I threw it out already. I don't run ULNS, so it sounds like I should leave the Xtra alone.

Actually I don't think Pohls Extra has AA's in it. Zeofood7 might be the supplement your thinking of. Pohls Extra gives a deeper coloration to your corals in a low nutrient tank. The coral snow description is correct.

Actually I do not run Zeovit but I do use the following supps from them:

Sponge Power
Zeofood7
Zeo Amino Acids
Coral Vitalizer
ZeoZyme
Coral Snow
Pohls Extra
ZeoBac
ZeoStart
Potassium
Potassium Iodide

and a few others I'm sure I forgot about :)

My tank runs with very low nitrates and Po4 < .03 typically (tested with a Hanna meter). I choose not to run full zeo (with zeolites) mainly because I travel m-f for work. I do like the effect of the zeo supplements tough. As everybody says and I cant stress enough, START SLOW... I had a wicked nasty algae bloom because I went overboard at first with the Amino Acids..

I am running BP Bio-pellets and just started using zeo coral vitalizer, sponge powder, LPS amino acid food and stylo pocci glow and have not run into any issues yet and am pleased with the results thus fare.

With all of the additives you use, how do you know the xtra is responsible for the deeper colors? Isn't that something an AA would do?

For that matter, Zeovit doesn't reveal what's in their products so how can you tell there's no AAs in it? Have you ever smelled the stuff?

In not trying to argue with you, just curious...

No worries! :) Mind you I am not even anywhere near an expert with Zeo stuff.. lol I have used the supps for a little over a year. Granted they do not tell you what is exactly in the stuff, they do tell you what the net effect is. Zeofood7 and AA's are very close in function as the both have AA's but the Zeofood also has vitamins as well. Pohls Extra, to my knowledge does not have any AA's in it. There are a few supps that are VERY close in function but most have certain "functions" or effects on coral coloration/growth etc. If your really interested I'd suggest visiting the zeovit forum and read. I'm sortof doing that now as I'm trying to get the rust off my game since I just got back in a couple months ago. I will say I was very happy with the effects I was getting from the supps on my last tank. All of these supplements I listed earlier I aquired over time. I didn't just fill up a shopping cart and start dropping them in my tank. Some supps I do not care for like B-Balance for instance. This supp lightens coral tissue and I don't like that look. Zeospur is a very aggresive and dangerous if you do not dose properly. I have not even attempted this supplement because I don't think I am at that skill level with zeo. Read, Read, Read ;)

I have been using the Xtra and vitalizer for about a month on a 125. Started at 5 mil of Xtra and 5 drops of vitalizer. I have not seen an effect that would be noticable. The colors are the same as they were prior to dosing. The growth has not been any different than before. I have some acros that never grew before dosing that have not grown at all. I also have acros that had decent growth that continue to grow at there normal pace.

5ml? How often? Gotta know more about your system to say anything... I would reccomend going to the Zeo forum.. FWIW. More is not better, if anything its worse. When I've od'd extra my colors went towards brown...

pohl's extra does nothing at all in my non-ULNS tan. I inherited a bottle and had been trying it out for 2 months - absolutely no effect of any kind.

Be cautious!

The Zeovit experts on "their" Forums recommend that you meet a parameter requirement, prior to dosing any Zeovit additive.

I myself have been on full blown Zeovit for the past 6 months and have used both Snow and PX, and both work great!

I used to use zeovi vitalizer, and AA, I had a big algae outbreak and I really think it was due to the AA.

When I dosed the vitalizer alone and in small doses, I notice amazing polyp extention on all my sps, especially at night. I have not seen that amount of polyp exension since I stopped it, and its been about a year, I still get good grwoth ok colors. I just ordered zeofood and vitalize to try them again and should be here in a couple of days I am interesting to see now that my tank is much more mature how they help if at all the sps.

the coral snow will be fine as long as it has not dried out all it is a hydrolyzed monmorrimite clay called bentonie it binds with positively charged ion in the system(Proteins) and creates a flocculant that can be skimmed out. funny thing about the zeo supplements is that a few years ago there were not any expiration dates on any thing

I also use some Zeo Supplements.

I use the Coral Snow and i relaly like it. I had a bunch of algea on the sand bed and now with biweekly dosings of Coral Snow and ZeoBak and daily dosing of Start2 the algea ont he sand has gone away! I really like it and will continue to use it! I've also noticed that my skimmate is very "creamy"

I have not opened the bottles since proline gave them to me. I opened it the other day, and it's still a milky solution. I've dosed it twice thus far, at half the dose, with a day in between. Going slow to see how things go. I'm hoping it will help clean up my sandbed a bit.

I put the Pohl's Xtra away, as it seems it should only be used in ULNS systems.

** go Lodi! Went to school at UOP :) **

I don't have algae on my sand bed, but it gets brownish.
