Sorry for digging up this old thread but I was planning on starting my nano with the Zeovit method but there are quite a few things that don't add up to me.
What if I stop dosing after a couple weeks? Would the tank crash?
Why do they recommend carbon? That sounds contradictory to me. Their system is based on dosing vitamins, trace elements etc. but doesn't GAC remove most of it? And aren't the Zeolites supposed to remove toxins etc. as well? Why do I need both, GAC and Zeolites? Sounds like snake oil to me. I have not seen any scientific research that shows how the Zeovit system works.
FIW, I used it for two years with success. The first time I ran it how it was supposed to.. The second I ran it with very heavy nutrient import/export that ended up just leaving me with troubles when I moved and got a little lazy.. It's worked great both times I used it and kept up on it though.
I've never ran the carbon. When I did, it was ran for only a few days and taken off the system for whenever I added corals and dipped them.
The Zeolites are meant to mainly just eat up phosphates and nitrates. Its essentially like running any other method that mainly takes care of nutrients while still running carbon to take care of excess chemicals and water clarity. IMO, I don't believe its "required" as it might be a sales technique of theirs. I'm sure it has some benefits but I wouldn't think of it as a "must have" for a ZEOvit tank.
On my last ZEO tank, after moving I stopped dosing immediately with little to no issues. Only issues were the severe algae I was having from food trapped everywhere, not ZEOvit's issues. I've also have a local friend who was doing ZEOvit and stopped cold turkey as well without any issues. I wouldn't say you'd be safe 100% doing so, but I didn't notice any bad repercussions from doing so, though I've heard stories.
