Check your iodine levels I noticed my inverts slowly dropping off when I was using a little more v.s.v than i should have. People have noticed that the v.s.v sometimes depletes your iodine levels to 0 if thats what your using. IF not I would just test your parameters and make sure everything checks out.

This is the first I've heard of this, why iodine? Iodine test kits are completely worthless as iodine takes many forms in saltwater.

I haven't dosed anything other than the KCl...

I have done 2 ~10% waterchanges this weekend to try and refresh the water and flush out anything that was bad...

Everything is looking pretty good now, just my monti is still all greyed out and has little PE...

Have you tried increasing feeding or dosing aminos?

Ya i have been feeding more, and dosing my kz aminos.

I dosed a little too many aminos, as i got a slight brownish algae on the glass, so i backed off for a day or two... but now im back to 1 drop per day. occasionally i dose 2 drops as my tank is ~33 gallons which is right between 25 and 50...

Man, I'm dosing 8ml a day of Kent CoralAccell AA's in my 45g system...and 4ml/day ov v/s/v, with 2 drops of ZEObac...and my Acro'sare STILL pale...I keep upping the amino's, and the acros's are staying pale or browning some....the monti's, Seriatopora, and LPS are all looking GREAT though!!!

"3-4 tsp of KCL daily in my 30gallon"

thats fast in my opinion. i did 3 tsp per 150gal system per day and i noticed some stress at first but i reduced it to a tsp per day. montis are so colorful now im really glad i dosed it. you have to go slow, like everything else in this hobby.

I agree. Too fast and/or too much. You may have OD on K+.

So an update on the tank issue is as follows. Things are living and thriving which is better than before. One problem is I am still getting a lot of brown diatom algae on the glass and on the LR. I have tried the stability and kz coral snow and it still exists, even got worse at times. I have stopped dosing all kz supps and are only using the most essential supps, v/s.v, stability, some mag, potassium and b ionic. Any suggestions on ehat I could do to kill this stuff off or what critters will eat it added some hermits but they dont see to be doing much.

What worked for me was in my daily carbon dosing, to reduce slightly the amount of Start2 I was using and to add an equal amount of vodka. So in effect I added the leading "v" to the existing "/s/v" that exists in Start2. As soon as I made that change, my long-lasting diatomous film went away and didn't come back.

If you're already using v/s/v, you could try reducing the sugar/vinegar component and increasing the vodka component.

I'm using Zeovit's Start2, which is a proprietary carbon source that does not contain ethanol (I'm told)...I believe it contains a form of sugar.

Anyway I switched from 100% Start2, where I had diatomous film on sandbed and panes, to 2/3 Start2 + 1/3 Vodka. After I made this change, the film went away.

Well what I am using now is;

400ml vodka

100 ml vinegar

3 tblsp sugar

What would you recommend I use or do to the current mixture....

I think canary is right.

I ran out of vinegar so I been dosing just the Vodka. I had the same brown slime, but now its gone.
I just thought it ran its course (and it may have been nothing more then that) , but it does sound like a possibility.

Im dosing straight vodka at 6 ml per day

I think canary is right.

She likely is right ;) That's one of the earlier observations we made and included it in our vsv article. If any brown/slime algae appears a reduction in sugar and vinegar will take care of it. We've found sugar to be primarily responsible, while vinegar can cause a more white slime type growth.

For fun we'll be trying some different carbon sources in the coming weeks...we'll update with observations ;)

fwiw, I've had some slime in vodka dosed systems.... could be coincidental.

My apologies. We have too...didn't mean to imply that they "caused" it. Vodka can cause slime too, we've just found sugar and vinegar more likely to cause what we described above.

I'm into my 6th week with Zeo. I just did my first zeolite change. Here is my dosing:

Zeobac: 5 drops daily for 2 weeks, then 5 drops 2x a week
Zeofood: 2 drops daily for 2 weeks, then 2 drops 2x a week
ZeoStart2: 0.4ml 2x a day
Zeo Amino Acids (AAHC): 2 drops daily
Coral Vitalizer: 4 drops daily
Coral Snow: 3ml approx. 1x a week after I siphon out HA

What I've noticed are my corals browning. Not all of them, but most. My green slimer and torts are ok (not great). I feed cyclopeeze three times a week. What I've also noticed is a slight decrease in my HA. The remaining HA is very stringy, and in some spots it has little bubbles, only on the HA, not the LR. I also have some stringy algea on the side glass that I can't reach to scrap off. Do the little bubbles indicated anything, overdose and underdose of something. I've been adding CV and AAHC for 2 weeks. I haven't noticed anything great in the coral appearance since starting CV and AAHC, but it does look like it's helping the HA. Any advice?

dosing

dosing

do you run your reactor 3hrs on 3hrs off

what are your current tank params

alk
cal
potassium
magnesium
po4

I f you have algae growth I would stop the zeo food for a few days

the start2 dose looks fine

also think about using CS 2 x a week to help your skimmer export the extra nutients that are causing the HA.

Okay so the majority of you say that straight vodka will resolve the brown diatoms over a period of time, how long did that take for you canary girl and the others? Also if I am dosing around 2-4 ml of v/s/v would it be okay to do the same dose with just vodka alone? Will that be enough to fuel the bacteria (stabilty) alone?
