Zero Luck with my Zero Edge

Just so I make sure I don't accidentally get banned, does anyone know where the rules mention raffles? I saw the no auctions/best offer I would think a raffle ticket would have a firm asking price, or is it because a raffle ticket in itself is a piece of paper and therefore non-reef related? I'm just trying to make sure I have a clear picture of the rules, because I tried to look it up and didn't find anything specifically about raffles.

I thought about talking to Dan, but he wasn't at the store last week when we popped in. Maybe I'll try him again. I also thought it might be amusing to try and sell it to Aquarium Adventure since they are technically a distributer....

I'm afraid of ebay, because if it doesn't sell, I'm stuck with a ton of seller fees. What about craigslist? Anyone have any luck with that board? It seems kind of shady, but I've heard some people say that they've had great luck with it.

I have used and bought items off of Craigslist, I really like the site. The only comment I have is to make sure the add is exactly the way you want I had a lot of trouble changing an ad, and I never saw it changed. You will also be prevented from posting an item twice, I was trying to change categories and it would not let me (even when I deleted the item)

It is worth a shot and the best part it is FREE.

Several post above this one ;)

You could always put it on e-bay with a $0.01 starting bid. If it were me, I would try to part everything out first and e-bay whatever doesn't sell. You aren't running it, so it is worth $0 to you now.

1 ebay and or craigslist.
2 in order to overcome the logistics of your buyer which finding them will require stepping out of our 50% foreclosure market. (IE not many folks in our specific market would have $15K liquid just lying around business or not.) You will need to consider what the total shipping bill will be.
3 You are not out $15K to $20K so expecting that despite your educational needs may be outside of reality.

Of course I wonder if MACNA and companies that donated the products to begin with had selling the items off in mind within the hobby and product promotion that the client patron relationship for these types of raffles affords?

Oh well, willy nilly questionable ethics aside, ebay or craigslist will be the ticket to expand your market out to your customer somewhere in the USA or Canada.

What the .... Mike, I have to read 90% of your posts over and over to understand where you are going with them. LOL

I think you meant that the donors were donating their wares to complete a "package" that should be given away to one lucky recipient and used by them exclusively. If that is the assumption then, IMO, too bad for them.

Honestly, If I got a tank "kit" like that I would probably use half of what was donated and sell the off the other half to buy things that were more in line with my way of doing things. I don't want people to tell me what is the best way to put hardware together. If they suggested a Berlin skimmer for that kit since it was under the 250 gallon rating of a Berlin skimmer does that mean you should have to set it up that way?

IMO Jen has every right to split the stuff up and sell it off as she sees fit and not feel bad about it at all.

Now maybe I misinterpreted your post and I am off on a tangent and if so ... oops :)

I agree that $15k might be too much of a chunk of change for anyone in our neighborhood but I think splitting it up may be profitable and she could choose what to hang on to for future use.

I have dropped a ticket into a raffle knowing full well that if I won the item it would be on the selling block the next day. It's not great for the sponsor that donated it but it is a game of chance.

Maybe I am too new...but is there a list of what we are talking about anywhere? Maybe with some prices next them? Maybe somebody might actually buy something?

Unless its $14,999 for the tank and the rest of the stuff is not valuable.

There was another thread somewhere....I'm not sure where it got off to....I don't think I actually posted on the club site because most already knew about it ...but here we go....

Tank 30W 65L 18H There’s a 3 inch lip around the tank for the overflowing. On the Zero Edge site they refer to this tank as being 3ftX 6 ft (Total Tank and stand height 65”)
Custom Zero Edge Sump underneath, 18X 36X 36 (50ish gallons)

Custom one-of-a-kind Euro-Reef Calcium Reactor.....according to their website, these don't even exist. (media up to you...needs tank/solenoid) I can give you the VP’s personal Email if you have questions about it, since there’s no manual because it was a custom job) CR RS-CR4

Euro-Reef RC-250 Skimmer

2 400 watt (Ice Cap) Metal Halides with lamps 14K, ballasts and custom light rig to hold them over the tank....it's like a giant arching rail.

Custom Stand-Black 34 W 74 L 47H (There is more room under this thing than in my 1st apartment)

2 vortechs (comes with extra controller for back-up )
2 Iwaki MD100RLT pumps

Heater and temp probe Pro-Heat D-58/300 Watt titanium Heater
2 Heavy Duty metal cased power strips and a mag drive (350 GPH)
All the plumbing used at MACNA to make it work (and whatever extra they found on the exhibit floor and tossed in
Extra Clear Tubing (50ish ft I think)

Top off container (but not the float or pump) and place for it in stand Ace Roto Mold 28 X 18X 14H (Sits in a holder inside the stand)
Some other randomness, a filter sock or 2, some filters around the intakes under the stand)

I agree no one will pay $15,000 for a tank someone says some vendor last year said would retail for that price with no other information given. Those of us at MACNA remember the tank - and it was memorable. I agree she would do better with non-MACNA attendees posting a complete inventory of what is included. The trouble with posting prices is most of the equipment is custom. Posting a complete inventory also means she will get bombarded with pm's to part it out, which she says she won't do.

Craigslist is free (or nearly free) and people (like me) looking for a tank check it at least once a week. The problem is the people who check Craigslists are usually looking for a bargain.

A lot less than $15k buys a really nice custom tank, and that is what she is competing with for people with that kind of money. I am hoping she drops her price enough on the tank for me to at least consider it, but realistically, I don't think she will. The MACNA tank was awesome, but $2k buys me a brand new 300 gallon that fits my room better, and if I find a used tank my money goes even further. I am sure others are in similar situations.

Now that I see the list of parts, its clear this is a problematic tank as others have mentioned. The customer look and overflow design conflict...its a centerpiece for a lobby or high end aquarium store...but with so many custom parts you can't use it to advertise AND you worry about people sticking their hands in the water.

I would piece out the components that make sense (like the skimmer) and try to recoup their value near 40-60% retail replacement cost. The infrastructure (tank/hood/plumbing) would be sold together.

Have you thought about contacting a company that does custom installs for large clients (i.e. corporations) but that does not otherwise retail tanks?

The designer/installer could pitch the custom tank to customer's looking to save a little in not having a custom tank built for them and perhaps you could cut them a 5% to 10% comission on the sale of the tank.

Just an idea because I know that companies that do nothing but install and maintain big tanks are out there.

If it comes down to it Jen I will buy you a pizza or something to help with college in exchange for the tank ;)

Did you ever think of owner finance if you could get a good down payment from someone. The monthly payments could help with your school.

isnt your investment in this kinda minimal if u won it in a raffle or something?
i mean, instead of trying to get full retail/top dollar for it, entertain the more realistic offers that come along and take the best one, either way, u made money on it. instead of it sitting in your garage collecting dust and the value of the items goes down because something newer and better will come along.

i'm kinda reminded on diamond appraisals here, they say a diamond is worth 20k on papers, but they will sell it to you for 5k....(shrugs)

I agree completely. The projected value is way more than what this sells for. That "list price" of $20,000 was to hype up the contest. You see it all the time, Koralia Nano lists at $39.99, but sells for $19.99 at most retail sources.

Not to mention this *is* used. It was full of water, it had hands all over it, and has been sitting collecting dust.

***PRICE DROP**** It has come to my attention now that Zero Edge is making these tanks available to the general public that their cost has fallen, and to be fair (And to make my tuition payment deadline) I am going to drop to match theirs in proportion.

I am now asking $10,000 for all. This includes all the equipment.

I think I also forgot to mention that it includes a dry-box. I was unaware that it was an added feature not available on all tanks.

Please PM if interested.
