Zero Nitrates = Pastel Acros (dosing nitrates)

I have been battelling and battelling high nutrients and the accompanying nuisance algae since May. Finaly got them down to 5ppm nitrate and 0 PO4 (Salifert) and will be getting ICP results in a week and my corals are noticeable pale. But at this point, the alage has been so bad that I am more interested in getting ahead of the alage than even keeping my coral alive.

Dosing potassium nitrate will work but you have to be careful not to throw balances off ( ex. Push P04 to absolute 0 or raise N03 too fast).

To echo some good advise on here and my own experiences, take the skimmer cup if and let it overflow for a few days. Nutrients will rise but will do so proportionally. You can also feed more. Whatever you do, do it slowly.

And don't stop water changes as they replenish micro elements in the water. Unless you are dosing specifically for these.

Algae and coral both need the same nutrients to grow. Trouble is algae has a much higher tolerance for variances in these and flourishes in a broader range. Get your nutrients stable and if you can, opt
for biological control like a lawnmower blenny or yellow tang. They will take care of the algae while coral has a chance to establish and outcompete algae for available nutrients.

FWIW my tank never does well when N03 falls below 2.5ppm and P04 below 0.05.
