Zibba's Reefs

really good growth and color, indicating great conditions! after reading your text, then seeing the images, are you talking about the same tank? lol

I agree, I'd hold off of any actions to correct algae/cyano, may subside after tank gets more established and you being away

great update

Haha, everyone is their own worst critic! There's plenty of "bad" mixed in with the good and the camera lens certainly gravitates towards to colorful SPS rather than the algae covered chalices and closed up zoas! Oh well. All in time I suppose.

I think manual removal (simply siphoning from the tank to the sump into a filter sock) goes a long ways in battling this stuff. I'd prefer to keep my hands out of the tank, but I couldn't believe how much I pulled out during the last water change with some aggressive siphoning. Talk about nutrient removal!

Thanks for the compliments! :)

ya a front tank shoot dude the tank looks awseome and for giggles throw the misses in there too come on man good looking misses and a sexy tank.:p

How about a FTS? Loving it so far!

Hoping to have a new one for you after doing some aquascaping this weekend.

Wow this is a really awesome tank, can't wait to see it mature!

Thanks for tagging along!

Haha, you're out of control! But I agree, thank you!

I have a full weekend ahead of me with tank projects, which I'll try to document along the way. In between yesterday's water change, right before adding some more sand and after mounting some corals, I took a few coral shots that I wanted to share:

Amazing sps collection! I need to do some sps collecting based on your photos. Looks great! Nuisance algae is always a frustrating battle as well as unwanted fish diseases. Had my share of both, the 10 week fallow period was the worst. Just coral to watch with no fish swimming around.....not in the display tank anyway. With the coloration you are getting I would really like to see your hydra 52 settings on all colors and perhaps copy you! I can't seem to get really vibrant colors out of mine. I used to run radiums and VHOs.....top notch colors there but a colorful power bill as well.

Yes, I'm debating what course to take regarding the fish but at this point, I'm just letting things settle for awhile longer before making any decisions.

I ran a radium and VHOs over my last tank and the colors on SPS were great. Hard to beat. But the heat and energy savings led me to the Hydras. I'm happy so far.

Here's a link to my LED settings: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5wv9tswtcn11vg3/A.G.E. 450 (11.7.2014).aip?dl=0

Here's a quick video of new coral we picked up two weeks ago. It's a red goniopora and under the blue LEDs, it has bright yellow tips but that's really hard to capture on camera. This is under full daylight:

Hi Zibba,
i love that short videoclip. Should put it in a frame and my desk and loop it!

Happy reefing
Bjorn

Wow SPS are rockin! Looking good sir. Keep at it the algae will be gone soon.

Bjorn & Ryan, thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments and encouragement.

Some new happenings: I started dosing MicroBacter7 two days ago and I'm following the instructions on the bottle: 100mL/day for 2 weeks. I'm doing this primarily to ensure I'm getting enough biodiversity and secondarily to see if it helps reduce cyano/algae.

As some do, I'm not planning to carbon dose (vodka, vinegar, sugar, bio-pellets, etc.) to feed the bacteria because I'm getting low readings of NO3 and PO4 as it is.

I've also had to up my dosage of Alk, which tells me corals are happy and growing. A few corals were starting to look a little pale so I upped the AcroPower from 15mL/day to 20mL/day.

Finally, the new QT system is plumbed and I've started mixing water to cycle the tank. I have two small tangs, a yellow-belly blue hippo and desjardini sailfin, that have been in the frag tank for several weeks. We'll be moving them to the QT tank once it cycles and leaving the frag tank fallow for about 10-weeks. Once the tangs are in their new QT home, I'll continue to monitor them for a few more weeks and treat if necessary. After that, all new fish will go through the QT and all new corals will go through the frag tank.

I haven't, and I'm likely not going to, let the display go fallow so I won't have any assurances that it's disease free. The fish currently in the display have all appeared healthy for several weeks now and I'm going to give it another 3-6 weeks before adding the small tangs. What I'm hoping for is that by following a stricter QT protocol, all new fish will be in the best shape to thrive in the main reef.

The newest addition to the main tank after spending about 6-weeks in the frag tank fattening up and making sure he was healthy:

There was some fighting between the sailfin and the yellow tang but after using the "mirror trick" things have settled down.

Love the Sailfin and great pics Zibba! Looking forward to seeing more of the tank.

wow great shots, everything is looking vibrant, great color on your Desjardini !

Thanks so much guys!

Some sad news, our female rhomboid jumped last night and died. I feel awful since I have all the materials to make the screen tops but I've been lazy about it. Entirely preventable and really disappointed in myself for not making them earlier.

In other news, I was trying to figure out some settings with my camera's flash last night so I took a few more pictures. Here are a few that turned out:
