Zoa problem? Or just paranoid..

Dissy

New member
Does anyone have any idea what the white tips on my zoas are? I would say 8 of the polyps open completely now.. (I annoyed everything by moving the buttons to get a current picture). The white things are well attached to the polyps, dont come off, etc.

I can't figure out what to make of it.. I did a dip last night with CoralRx Pro. Prior to the dip, 2 opened partially. Afterwards, they opened completely..

But, I've got nothing on the ones with white tips. It's almost like a balloon.. If you try to move it, the whole polyp moves with it.

:worried:

Wow! Looks like an internal infection of some sort.
I've never saw/heard about that before.

I would try to do a Lugol's dipping.
8 - 10 oz of tank water with 3 - 5 drops of Lugol's for 5 min. to start with.
Good luck!

I don't know what Coral Rx Pro has in it, but I know that it contains no iodine nor oxidizers in it. Coral Rx industrial is supposed to be more concentrated than the Pro. That's why I tell people to follow the directions. They have 3 different strengths of Coral Rx!

Lugol's has iodine, potassium iodide and distilled water.
It's a medical antiseptic and disinfectant for wounds.
It doesn't stain or hurt corals/zoas when used properly.

Please do a search and you'll find out more on Lugol's use for zoas.
It has been suggesting for many years in this forum.

Hmm. It just says "Distilled water, proprietary blend of natural extracts" (which smells remarkably like tea tree oil.

I don't have anywhere local I can get Lugols - would have to order it online. Is there anything that may be available locally that may compare? (I have 9000 Walgreens around me).

Zero experience with corals, so I'm trying to wing it here, but I don't want to hurt the other polyps that are on the rock - whatever it is pops out a new head every week...

Smell can even be from Tea Tree Oil, and if it has it, that would be good.
I use it myself for some of my wounds. They should specify. Because they don't, we just don't know what they have in there.

You can use Coral Rx or Lugol's solution.
Why not to order them online?
You could also try iodine tincture. Use like the Lugol's:

8 - 10 oz of tank water with 3 - 5 drops of Lugol's for 5 min.

The CoralRx Pro is what I did use already - yesterday.. I've been searching Lugols, but there seems to be 5,000,000 of them out there. I found a Kent brand (which is the reef salt I use)..

http://www.amazon.com/Kent-Marine-L...d=1382319233&sr=8-1&keywords=lugols+coral+dip

Is there a better brand that's recommended?

Some of them seem to be disappearing on me... It wasn't a horribly expensive rock, but I'd like to get it figured out before I buy more...

Thanks for your help, BTW!

You're welcome!
If they are on the whole rock you have to be careful.
You shouldn't dip the rock, 'cause it will kill the organisms in/on the rock and they will rot. Normally we dip the plugs or small rocks only.
I thought that the polyps were on a small rock laying on the bigger rock, when I saw the picture.

The Kent brand should be fine!

You are correct. It's the purple rock which is approx. 3x2x2.
